Mother Of Us All

LP (Item 473262) Tetragrammaton, 1969 — Condition: Very Good+
The "quartet" in the group's name is well-placed – as there's almost a jazz combo undercurrent to the record at times – hiding beneath some folksier instrumentation and vocals in ways that remind us a lot of Tim Buckley's early best for Elektra! Steve Baron's perhaps a bit less blue-tinged than Buckley on his vocals, but still a pretty great singer/songwriter overall – nicely mature, and quite free of any folk rock cliches – with a fresh appeal that really makes this record worth seeking out. Instrumentation includes acoustic guitar, organ, and piano – but it also feels like there's some vibes lurking back in the mix, giving some tunes a warmly chromatic nature. Manny Albam helped a bit on arrangements, and titles include "Lonely River", "In The Middle", "Goodbye Road", "Mr Green", "God Never Lived For Me", "Shadow Man", and "Bertha Was The Mother Of Us All".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Deep Purple

Shades Of Deep Purple
Tetragrammaton, 1968. Very Good+
The birth of a legend, and easily one of the heaviest records to hit the mainstream in the late 60s! The album's got a sinister quality that you can hear on the first few notes – a low-end, rumbling approach that brings in a lot more fuzzy bass than other groups of the time had ever thought ... Deep Purple
Tetragrammaton, 1969. Very Good
The mighty '69 self-titled set from Deep Purple – not as metallic or hard rock radio ready as their subsequent hit LPs – a deep effort that combined walloping intensity with a far flung blend classical element, proggy changes and bluesy rock! Book Of Taliesyn
Tetragrammaton, 1969. Very Good+
The heavy groove of Deep Purple continues – in a style that's a bit more song-focused and guitar-led than the group's debut – but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Some of the rumbling bass of before has been toned down a bit, but that leaves plenty of space for more jamming guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album
EMI (UK), 1967. Near Mint-
A brilliant bit of psychedelia – still as fresh today as it was many decades back – and the crowning achievement of Pink Floyd during the early Syd Barrett years! The album's got all the best elements of the group firmly in place – the penchant for long-jamming tracks that still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tim Buckley

Goodbye & Hello
Elektra, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Easily one of our favorite albums by Tim Buckley – and a record that really opens up with some key jazzy touches! Buckley's still got his roots in folk here, and his vocals are yet to hit the extremes of Starsailor or Lorca – but there's also a new sense of inflection to the way he ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1966. Very Good
A very groovy record – kind of a mix of rock and blue eyed soul, recorded by the twin-guitar team of Pat & Lolly Vegas – a big act on the Sunset Strip scene of the 60s who later morphed into Native American rock group Redbone! On this early set, Pat and Lolly have a pretty hard-hitt ... LP, Vinyl record album
