The "quartet" in the group's name is well-placed – as there's almost a jazz combo undercurrent to the record at times – hiding beneath some folksier instrumentation and vocals in ways that remind us a lot of Tim Buckley's early best for Elektra! Steve Baron's perhaps a bit less blue-tinged than Buckley on his vocals, but still a pretty great singer/songwriter overall – nicely mature, and quite free of any folk rock cliches – with a fresh appeal that really makes this record worth seeking out. Instrumentation includes acoustic guitar, organ, and piano – but it also feels like there's some vibes lurking back in the mix, giving some tunes a warmly chromatic nature. Manny Albam helped a bit on arrangements, and titles include "Lonely River", "In The Middle", "Goodbye Road", "Mr Green", "God Never Lived For Me", "Shadow Man", and "Bertha Was The Mother Of Us All". © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
