Read My Lips

LP (Item 473197) Capitol, 1985 — Condition: Very Good+

An early 80s set from Melba Moore – recorded at a time when she was really coming into her own! Read My Lips has Melba working nicely with some tight Capitol soul backings – often a bit heavy on the beats, but in a way that guides the tunes strongly from the bottom, and lets Melba's vocals really shine over the top! The instrumentation is heavy on the keyboards, and also features some polished guitars – and production is by Beau Huggins and the Hush Productions team – on titles that include "The Love Of A Lifetime", "Read My Lips", "I Can't Believe It", "When You Love Me Like This", "King Of My Heart", "Winner", and "Mind Over Matter".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a small cutout notch.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1982. Near Mint-
An early 80s classic from Melba Moore – best known for one of her biggest hits, "Love's Comin' At Ya", an enduring number that's got an irresistible groove! Tavares

Loveline
Capitol, 1981. Very Good+
Tavares really sound great here – way past their 70s hits, but still wonderfully balanced as a harmony soul group! As always, Tavares prove they can groove without ever losing their cool – singing wonderfully amidst some tight-stepping numbers – the best of which hit a warm ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patti Drew

Tell Him
Capitol, 1967. Very Good
A homegirl from the Chicago suburbs, on her first solo outing. Includes the massive "Tell Him", plus a bunch of other sweet 60s soul cuts. Classic soul of the sort that was being produced independently, and then being sold to the majors. All of her Capitol LPs are great, but this one's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Rawls

Soulin'
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good
One of the best albums that Lou Rawls cut with the team of HB Barnum and David Axelrod – that incredible duo who made some of his 60s Capitol albums so great! The style here is wonderful – upbeat grooves from Barnum – who brings more soul into Lou's music than before – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Rawls

Nobody But Lou
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good
Great early stuff by Lou! No, the record doesn't have funky David Axelrod arrangements – but it does have some great jazzy backing by Benny Carter, which gives Lou's sweet soulful voice a great platform to riff off of. The record's one of Lou's jazziest, and it's mostly tight and swinging ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Groove!
Capitol, 1970s. Near Mint-
One of those compilations that was either a loss leader, or a commercial attempt to capitalize on past hits laying around the vaults (often sold in supermarkets and drug stores), but still quite a respectable collection of soul and jazz numbers from Capitol: Nancy Wilson "Uptight (Everything's ... Tavares

Best Of Tavares
Capitol, Mid 70s. Near Mint-
One of Capitol's biggest soul bands of the 70s – and a strong sweet group who made the shift from mellow soul to the disco years. The set kicks off with the band's massive "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel", but we prefer their mellower stuff – like their sublime version of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Persuasions

We Came To Play
Capitol, Mid 70s. Very Good+
A beautiful group soul vocals effort from the Persuasions in the early 70s – working in a throwback acapella mode, but still with a fresh feel – thanks to a hip dawn of the 70s sound, and a stripped-down feel that you'd probably have never gotten back in the day! It's amazing how fresh ... LP, Vinyl record album

Peabo Bryson

Don't Play With Fire
Capitol, 1982. Very Good-
Tremendous work from Peabo Bryson – and a record that really has him coming on strong, and staying long! Bryson's vocals are sublime – rooted in gospel depth, but turned towards some warmer secular modes – all wrapped up in a style that's tight, but never slick – perfect ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maze

We Are One
Capitol, 1983. Very Good+
Completely killer work from Frankie Beverly & Maze – captured here at the height of their power, with that amazing blend of Frankie's lead vocals and the group's tight instrumentation – all at a level that so many others tried to copy, but never got this right! The sense of unity ... LP, Vinyl record album

Alicia Myers

Alicia
MCA, 1981. Very Good
Massive work from Alicia Myers – a set that's right up there with her One Way recordings, but with some deeper, more personal touches as well!
