Rick James — Street Songs (180 gram pressing) ... LP 20.99

One of the all-time great Rick James albums – a return to funkier sounds for Rick that worked both artistically and commercially – and actually got over far better than his more blatant attempts at crossover material on other records! The mix here is perfect – a true summation of all that made Motown great at the time, and the special sort of energy that made Rick one of the freshest mainstream talents at the end of the 70s! The record put a lot of money in Barry Gordy's pockets, and for good reason too – given that the set includes the classic hit "Super Freak" – plus "Give It To Me Baby", "Ghetto Life", "Make Love To Me", "Below The Funk (Pass The J)", and "Fire & Desire" – all done in that compressed pop-funky style that James kind of took from Bootsy Collins and manage to successfully soup up for the masses!  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Motown Classic Vinyl pressing, still sealed! Cover has a cutout notch.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rick James

Glow
Gordy, 1985. Sealed
Rick James hits a smoother sort of style here – one that's almost a compressed take on the mainstream version of funk first crafted on his earlier records, fused into a more radio-friendly approach for the Prince generation! 21st Creation

Break Thru
Gordy, 1978. Near Mint-
An obscure Motown group from the end of the 70s – 21st Creation had a soaring uptempo group sound that reminds us of some of the more successful disco hits of Tavares from the same time. Gordy, 1967. Very Good+
The Temptations in a mellow mood, but one that's still plenty darn swinging – thanks to some jazzy arrangements from HB Barnum, Oliver Nelson, and Don Costa! Dennis Edwards

Coolin' Out
Gordy, 1985. Sealed
A second solo set from Temptation Dennis Edwards – a great set of mellow modern soul, with a very 80s approach to the production and arrangements. Black Magic
Gordy, 1972. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever from Martha Reeves & The Vandellas – a set that's way past their early overheard hits for Motown, and which shows the group really stretching out with a new sort of power!
