❔

The classic meeting of the great French arranger/pianist with American jazz players like Miles Davis, Ben Webster, Milt Hinton, Donald Byrd, Hank Jones, and others. The tracks are a beautiful strident blend of Legrand's best arranging styles, and they show his keen talent for letting the soloist step forth into the spotlight, while complicated orchestrations swirl all around him. The titles are mostly jazz standards, but they're done in a great way, with lots of punch, and lots of great work by all the players. Titles include "Round Midnight", "Night In Tunisia", "Nuages", "In A Mist", and "Django".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono 6 eye pressing, with deep groove. Cover has splitting on the seams.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An excellent album of Latin material from Herbie Mann – and proof that he's equally great in just about any setting! The album's a rare Columbia Records outing from Herbie – but it's easily one of his greatest of the 60s, thanks to some really smoking arrangements from Oliver Nelson ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

We Want Miles
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Well, it's not the Plugged Nickel or electric Japan in the 70s – but this is a surprisingly great 2LP set of live work by Miles from the early 80s – recorded in New York and Boston, with a lively full-on concert sort of feel! The group features Marcus Miller on bass, Bill Evans on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Arthur Blythe

In The Tradition
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint-
Arthur Blythe may be in the tradition here, but he's never of the tradition – as the set represents the modern musician taking on a host of older jazz currents, while carving things out with his own special sort of soul! Half the tunes are familiar favorites, the other half originals – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chet Baker In Milan
Jazzland, 1959. Near Mint-
A rare Italian album from Chet Baker – wonderfully cooking small group work that's a far bit greater than his more familiar "with strings" session recorded in Italy during the same period! The album's got Chet working with an array of great players from the local scene – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Hutcherson

Spiral
Blue Note, 1968/1979. Near Mint-
Moody material from Bobby Hutcherson – and one of the first records to feature his vibes in the company of tenorist Harold Land – a player who would help Hutcherson make some mighty fine music over the years! JR Monterose

JR Monterose
Blue Note, 1956. Near Mint-
The only Blue Note album ever recorded by JR Monterose – one of the more enigmatic figures of the 50s scene! Doug Carn

Revelation
Black Jazz, 1973. Near Mint-
The Black Jazz recordings of Doug Carn are always a revelation – some of the most powerful, progressive work on the American underground of the early 70s – music that got Carn into way more record collections than you might expect! The sound here is a perfect summation of Doug's early ... LP, Vinyl record album

Woody Shaw

Imagination
Muse, 1988. Near Mint-
A late date for Woody Shaw, but a great one too – a bit more straightforward than some of his more righteous albums of the 70s, but still proof that Shaw is easily one of the greatest trumpeters of his generation! The album's got a laidback sort of feel, and features a fair bit of familiar ... LP, Vinyl record album
MGM, 1963. Near Mint-
A wonderful album from Lalo Schfrin! This one mixes together bossa piano and sweeping string arrangements – in a style that's incredibly dark-edged and driving, with a sound that's at once spooky and lovely – a dancing groove that makes the best tracks really sparkle! The album's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Glory Of Love
CTI, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Herbie Mann's soulful flute meets the breezy production values of CTI/A&M, for a good set of tracks that have a light easy feel to them, and a nice post-bossa groove! The set includes a good cover of "Upa, Neguinho", plus "Love Is Stronger Far Than We", "The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

Tippin' The Scales
Blue Note, 1962/1984. Near Mint-
A sweet little quartet from Jackie McLean – a later entry into his bop-level sets for Blue Note, recorded right before his "new thing" years! The album never got a proper release back in the 60s, and only first saw the light of day two decades later – but it's a real cooker ... LP, Vinyl record album
