Sweet 80s soul from Dionne Warwick – an album that features a fair bit of production work from Barry Gibb – and a sometime sound that definitely shows his presence! The style here is smoother than Dionne in earlier years – with a nice undercurrent of jazz in the instrumentation, one that helps keep things hipper than you might expect – and which avoids a lot of the cliches of early 80s pop soul that might muck things up. Gibb's touch helps things glide nicely at times – a bit of that soulful Bee Gees flourish – and tracks include "Heartbreaker", "It Makes No Difference", "Take The Short Way Home", "Just One More Night", "You Are My Love", and "Our Day Will Come". We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Scepter, 1964. Very Good
It's plenty easy to make way for Dionne Warwick with an album as great as this – the kind of set that spawned countless imitators in later years, but which still sounds better than most of the rest! Hearing the record is almost like going back to the headwaters of 60s pop – especially ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lovely early work from Dionne – one of the greatest voices to ever get the support of the great Burt Bacharach, the guiding hand on this tasty batch of early singles! It's nearing the end of the 70s and Eddie's still goin' strong, with another LP of sophisticated soul. By this point, Eddie's already shown he can groove smooth and mellow, or pop along nicely with a dancefloor oriented groove, which he manages to do in stride here, his light voice meshing nicely ... Surprisingly wonderful later work from Mandrill – really stretching out in their style, but in a warmly soulful way! By this point in their career, Mandrill had come a long way from the proto-spiritual/Latin/funk sound of earlier days – but surprisingly, they'd actually matured into a ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great one from Gil Scott-Heron – and another wonderful collaboration with Brian Jackson – who handled all the arrangements on this set, and gave the record that sweet jazzy sound that makes Gil's work from this time some of his best ever! Sweet modern soul with a sound that would get picked up on years later by the LA G-Funk scene. An overlooked gem from Gil Scott-Heron's classic years on Arista Records – recorded at a time when the singer and group were strongly working in a jazzy vein – even though Brian Jackson isn't part of the lineup! Gil learned plenty of lessons from his time with Jackson – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smooth soulful jazz from Harvey Mason – one of his strong 70s winners for the Arista album, and a record that really brings a new level of class to his sound! A very fitting title – not just because of Ray's big fame for the theme of the film Ghostbusters, but also because Parker was really hitting the charts at the time! One of the great lost funky soul records on Arista from the late 70's, and an album that hardly ever seems to come our way anymore. A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its ... LP, Vinyl record album
