This mid 60s set for Cadet finds Jamal and his trio, featuring Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums playing it cool despite the title – which is actually the Irving Berlin penned lead track. Other tracks include a rendition of Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas", the latin-tinged "Misty", "April In Paris", "Allison", "Maybe September", and "The Girl Next Door". (Blue label mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has a cutout hole.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mother Nature's Son
Cadet, 1968. Very Good
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums of all time – an incredible reworking of tunes by The Beatles, done in collaboration with Cadet Records studio maestro Charles Stepney – who brings in some amazing arrangements and production styles to the record! The tunes are familiar, but the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fourth Dimension
Cadet, 1974. Good+
An excellent album from Brother Jack – one that has him making a shift from organ to electric keyboards, but in a mode that loses none of his funkiness, none of his soul, and none of his wit! The album's got some wonderfully angular groovers – showing that McDuff was always growing his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, Mid 60s. Very Good Gatefold
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Percussion Discussion (Tough/Max)
Chess/Cadet/Argo, 1957/1958. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A 70s issue of 2 late 50s hard bop sides released by Argo and Cadet. Though the title and packaging might lead you to believe Max and Art are performing side by side, it's really just two albums slapped together, and not necessarily inappropriately, in a gatefold sleeve to sell easily. Magnetic Feel
Cadet, 1975. Very Good
One of the great funky electronic records recorded by McDuff for Cadet! Includes some excellent groovers with a tight loping funk feel – like "Blue Monsoon", "A Long Goodie", and a nice cover of "Don't Mess With Mister T". Jack plays moog and Fender Rhodes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul In The Night
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
A twin-alto session that matches the sax of Sonny Stitt with that of Bunky Green – both set up in a tight little combo that includes some smoking work on Hammond by organist Odell Brown! Atlantic, 1955. Very Good-
Darkly imaginative work from the great Lennie Tristano – and one of the few full albums he ever cut as a leader! Prestige, 1969. Very Good-
A great little record – one of Houston's most successful for Prestige! The album follows strongly in that late 60s pre-funk mode that Prestige was cooking up – tight and groovy, with electric bass dropped into the mix, electrifying things a bit, but still really just grooving in a ...
