Spirit Of The Boogie

LP (Item 4718) De-Lite, 1975 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
Way more than just a "boogie" album – as you might think from the title – and much more a hard-hitting batch of funky tunes, mixed with some even cooler laidback numbers! The album follows heavily off the style of Wild & Peaceful – mixing together the group's older crack rhythms with some newer, hipper, jazzier inflections – making for an incredibly powerful sound that really opens them up. Titles include the massively funky "Jungle Jazz" – a jazzy follow up to "Jungle Boogie" – plus some spiritual numbers that have a cosmic soul jazzy feel, like the tracks "Cosmic Energy", "Ancestral Ceremony", and "Winter Sadness". The whole thing's great – and other titles include "Mother Earth", "Caribbean Festival", and "Ride The Rhythm".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s Canadian pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Crown Heights Affair

Dreaming A Dream
De-Lite, 1975. Very Good
A dream of a record from Crown Heights Affair – the group's classic first set, and maybe as fine a batch of early club work you could ever hope to find! Like so many of the east coast acts at the start of the disco generation, these guys are a well-trained funk ensemble, playing at a faster ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
An amazing double-live album that's to concert records what James Brown's Payback was to the sound of studio funk! Like that classic, this is a double-length 2LP set that really has James and the JBs stretching out and doing their thing – working here in a setting that's supposed to be the ... Mary Wells

Vintage Stock
Motown, 1966. Very Good-
A very strong compilation of some of the best soul that Mary Wells recorded for Motown – and probably her only real album for the label. Although issued in 1966, the material hearkens from earlier days at Motown – and titles include "The One Who Really Loves You", "Two ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

I Want You
Tamla, 1976. Very Good+
An incredible record – quite possibly our favorite ever by Marvin Gaye! The album is quite unique – written by Leon Ware, and recorded in collaboration with him – done as a "suite" of tracks based on themes of passion, joy, and new love – all of which were very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Reflections
Arista, 1981. Very Good-
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patti Drew

Wild Is Love
Capitol, 1969. Sealed
A fantastic later album from Patti Drew – recorded after her early hits, both as a solo act and with the Drew-Vels in the 60s – and done in a much more mature, sophisticated style overall! Richard Evans did the arrangements – and carries over some of his best Chess/Cadet talents ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

3 + 3
T Neck, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback ... LP, Vinyl record album

Osibisa

Superfly TNT
Buddah, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Some nice heavy Afro-funk grooves, courtesy of Osibisa, for this follow-up score to the original Superfly! The sound of the music is quite different than Curtis Mayfield's famous soundtrack – and there's lots of heavy bass and percussion, plus some additional arrangements by Michael Gibbs. ... A huge moment for War – maybe the group's biggest album of the 70s, but a set that still has them holding onto everything that makes the great!
