We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Virgin, 1988. Very Good+
A nice bit of Detroit Techno – one that really crossed over into the mainstream, hitting all the stops on the remixes here with one from Derrick May, another from Juan Atkins, another from Steve Silk Hurley and the radio version of the original from Kevin Saunderson! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Virgin, 1993. Near Mint- (pic cover)
You know, we tend to beat up CJ Mackintosh a bit over on the hip hop pages because his UK remixes always veered a bit too far into the mainstream for our tastes, but when you're taking on an artist that's already squarely in the pop soul charts like Janet, it's not like you're doing that much ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

A great single that signalled the return of pure funk to the charts. Jazzie B takes a classic James Brown-esque groove, filters it through some hip hop production, and comes up with this nice track that has a deep deep bottom, and a slow funky groove. Offered up here in a number of different ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Janet Remixed
Virgin, 1995. Very Good+ 2LP
A load of remixes of tracks off Janet's Janet LP, which had been released a few years before this collection. Many house versions, but a few mid and down tempo ones too: "That's The Way Love Goes (CJ FXTC club mix)", "If (Brothers In Rhythm house mix)", "Because Of Love ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Frankie goes for the charts, but still with a very nice groove – and a deep bubbling under kind of sound that stays true to his Chicago roots! Still wish he would have used a real whistle, though! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Atlantic, 1990. Very Good+ (pic cover)
"Hold On" is a slammer – one of the first strong R&B cuts to go hip hop, with beats that are great, and which mix together perfectly with so many other tracks from the time. The extended version has a nice long intro, too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
T Neck, 1982. Near Mint-
An excellent single, featuring one of the group's best late tracks! "We Go A Long Way Back" is a smooth modern soul stepper – with a compressed harmony hook that's great, and a warm soul feel that's a lot more 70s sounding than some of the band's other output at the time! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Warner, 1985. Very Good+ (pic cover)
"Pop Life" is a real gem from Prince – a tune that's completely catchy, but maybe a bit more laidback than some of his previous hits – in a mode that some folks were calling a bit psychedelic at the time, but which really just shows the increasing depth of the man's genius! ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Smurf/I Need Love
Believe In A Dream, 1982. Very Good+
"Smurf" is a sweet bit of electro funk from Tyrone – with a tight breakdance beat wobbling through the cut, and lots of bass work over the top! Smurf it up! 12-inch, Vinyl record
