We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Virgin, 1988. Very Good+
A nice bit of Detroit Techno – one that really crossed over into the mainstream, hitting all the stops on the remixes here with one from Derrick May, another from Juan Atkins, another from Steve Silk Hurley and the radio version of the original from Kevin Saunderson! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Virgin, 1979. Near Mint- (pic cover)
Produced by Ron & Russell Mael. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Brunswick, 1979. Very Good+
What can we say? This is a classic! The track has a monster roller skating groove that's been sampled more than a few times over the years – but which still sounds incredible on its own! Both parts are great – and even though the single's pretty darn long, you still never want it to ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Hardrock (long, short)
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint- (pic cover)
Basically a remake of "Rockit" with a harder edge: electro grooves, 80s sounding Fairlight & Yamaha keys and loud guitars, plus D. St on the cut. 12-inch, Vinyl record
RCA, 1982. Very Good+
A massive jam from Keni Burke – easily his greatest tune ever, and the kind of track we'd hardly have imagined back when he was a little tyke in the Five Stairsteps! The track's got a thumping, stomping kind of groove that really gets going from the start – and the vocal hook is a ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

One of our favorites off the first LP, with a remix by the Beatnuts! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Showdown (vocal, inst)
Sugar Hill, 1981. Very Good
The "showdown...all the way live between the Sugarhill gang and the Furious Five". A nice early Furious Five cut that someone has sampled recently. And while were not the biggest Sugarhill Gang fans, they do alright on this cut with the Furious Five, who we suspect actually wrote the ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Def Jam, 1993. Near Mint- (pic cover)
One of LL's better cuts, and a nice track built around a sample from "Blind Alley". The remixes are done by Easy Mo Bee. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Rap-A-Lot, 1991. Very Good (pic cover)
An absolute classic from the Geto Boys, a chilling bit of self-conscious paranoia built on a now famous Isaac Hayes sample. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Jive, 1993. Very Good
Nice 12" single of "Oh My God", with remixes by Tribe and Tumblin' Dice, plus a guest appearance by Busta Rhymes. 12-inch, Vinyl record
