Main Street People

LP (Item 47118) ABC, 1973 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold

Really nice work from The Four Tops – proof that they were still going quite quite strong after Motown! The album's got a hip sound that shows the group moving through a wider range of emotions than we ever remember – crafting rich deep harmonies that still stand apart from the big wave of sweet soul quartets of the early 70s, and which sparkle with all the emotion that Levi Stubbs' voice had to offer. Includes their great theme to Shaft In Africa, the track "Are You Man Enough" – plus loads of other great ones like "I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind", "It Won't Be The First Time", "Sweet Understanding Love", "Too Little, Too Late", "Peace Of Mind", and "Main Street People".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Command Quadraphonic pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

ABC, 1974. Near Mint-
Killer 70s work by the Four Tops – one of the group's best post-Motown albums, and a really hard-hitting batch of live tunes! There's a sound here that's grittier than just about any other Four Tops album – and that includes the classics for Motown – a style that brings together ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, 1967. Near Mint-
The Four Tops weren't the first of the Motown groups to get the broadway treatment, but they do a pretty nice job with it! Thanks to some swinging help from producer Frank Wilson, the quartet manage to still shine even though they're shackled with a set of tunes from over-blown broadway shows of ... Motown, 1960s. Very Good
Despite the fame of their big hits – like "Reach Out I'll Be There", "I Can't Help Myself", "Baby I Need Your Loving", and "It's The Same Old Song", all of which are on this set, and which have been heard ad infinitum – the Four Tops are actually ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brass Fever

Time Is Running Out
ABC, 1976. Near Mint-
Despite the name, and a concept that makes it seem like the record might be some throwaway disco set – the album's actually a good one, very much in the mode of the best uptempo soul on ABC at the time, but done without a vocalist. The album's arranged and conducted by McKinley Jackson, who ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dramatics

Dramatic Jackpot
ABC, 1975. Sealed Gatefold
One of the Dramatics' best albums, and a real masterpiece of 70's group soul! The style here is a bit different than the group's previous records for Stax – maybe a bit tighter, with sweet arrangements – but these fantastic vocals that cut through everything and grab you to your core ... Ray Charles & Betty Carter

Ray Charles & Betty Carter
ABC, 1961. Very Good+
A classic album of soul duets – and one of the deeper records cut by Betty during the 60s! The arrangements are by the great Marty Paich, and although there's some singers in the background, the overall sound is still pretty nice and soulful. Betty's high voice works well with Ray's raspy ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A double album recorded for ABC after Charles left Warner Brothers and the 103rd Street Rhythm Band behind – but still very much an extension of that group's later stretched-out funky records! Nice long cuts with grooves that are a little bit more jazzy than his earlier 60's stuff. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love's The Thing
Buddah, 1975. Very Good+
A really great step forward for Barbara Mason – a record that's got her working in a more mature mode than before, and a deeper soul style as well! Norman Feels
Just Sunshine, 1973. Sealed Gatefold
Mellow soul, sweeping strings, and sweet electric keys – a stone 70s classic from Norman Feels – one of the greatest soul singers you've never heard before! Get Up
Chocolate City/Casablanca, 1979. Near Mint-
Bouncy, bubbly soul from Vernon Burch – one of his stone dancefloor classics from the 70s, served up with a groove that never quits! Folk Songs
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Sealed
A great lost album from Jerry – and a key link in the hip Chicago scene that produced Terry Callier and Oscar Brown Jr! Sure, you might think of the album as a silly "cash in on the folk craze" effort – but Jerry keeps it soulful throughout, and thanks to some wonderful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Padlock – Special Mixes By Larry Levan
Garage/Island, 1983. Very Good+
A mini-LP, but one that packs more punch than most full length sets – thanks to a top-shelf lineup all the way through!
