Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars Vol 2 (10 inch LP)

LP (Item 470811) Contemporary, 1953 — Condition: Very Good+

Great early work from Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse group – working here at a level that's almost more freewheeling than on some of their later Contemporary albums! The format's still very much in place here – a host of key All Stars who include Milt Bernhart on trombone, Russ Freeman on piano, Jimmy Giuffre and Bob Cooper on tenors, and Shelly Manne on drums – but there's almost a more "live" sort of energy overall – a bit more boppish and open, with each new player leaping freely into the fray. Titles include "Luau", "The Duke You Say", "The Big Top", "Sunset Eyes", "Comin' Thru The Rye Bread" and "Taking A Chance On Love".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a peeled spot in the top right.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Contemporary, 1954. Very Good-
Tremendous work from Howard Rumsey's early Lighthouse group – and a great example of why they were such a great act at the time! The "solo spotlight" in the title is extremely apt here – as each of the album's tracks features a standout performance by group members who emerge ... LP, Vinyl record album

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars

Jazz Rolls Royce (Lighthouse pressing)
Lighthouse, 1957. Very Good
A great little record – and one that gets past the over-used "Howard Rumsey Lighthouse" name, to move into a set of 50s west coast jazz at its best! The core group features Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino, Stu Williamson, Stan Levy, Victor Feldman, and Rumsey – and for the session ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good
A beautiful set from Art – stripped-down and elegant, cut right at that time when his tone on trumpet was evolving into something sublime. The group's a perfect one for Farmer at this point – Hank Jones, Addison Farmer, and Roy Haynes, all lyrically-minded players with just the right ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Something Else!!!!
Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint-
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1956. Sealed
Material recorded by LA bassist Curtis Counce at the height of his career – working in the mid 50s with a group that includes Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Harold Land on tenor, Frank Butler on drums, and the weird "sideways" piano player Carl Perkins on the ivory 88's! The session's a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer

On The Road
Contemporary, 1976. Near Mint-
One of Farmer's best sessions of the 70s – recorded in a mode that's a bit freer than usual, with a group that includes Hampton Hawes, Ray Brown, and either Steve Ellington or Shelly Manne on drums. Art Pepper sits in on 4 of the album's 6 tracks – and it's his tone and edgieness that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hampton Hawes

All Night Session Vol 2
Contemporary, 1956. Near Mint-
A noteworthy session from pianist Hampton Hawes – a rare quartet session from the 50s (at a time when Hawes was mostly working in trios) – and also a three volume set of releases, all recorded in the space of a single night! The album is truly an All Night Session – as the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bud Shank & Shorty Rogers

California Concert
Contemporary, 1985. Sealed
The title and cover are an homage to the Pacific Jazz label live dates from LA in the 50s – and the music here does a good job of following suit as well! Altoist Bud Shank and trumpeter Shorty Rogers are reunited beautifully in an open-ended live setting – the kind of date that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Pepper

Living Legend
Contemporary, 1976. Very Good+
An excellent 70s side from Art Pepper – recorded with a West Coast rhythm section that includes Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden, and Shelly Manne! The trio all play here with a remarkable intensity, given the date of the session – and although the production's got that later, crisper ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phineas Newborn

World Of Piano
Contemporary, 1961. Very Good+
Maybe not a "world" of piano, but a real classic from Phineas Newborn – a record that marks a harder, more soulful sound than some of his 50s work – shaking free from some of his flowery touches on the keys, and digging much deeper into the groove of his Memphis roots! The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1986. Sealed
A strong 80s live date – Bud Shank on alto, with Dave Peck on piano, Chuck Deardorf on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums! LP, Vinyl record album

Barney Kessel

Let's Cook!
Contemporary, 1957. Very Good
Well, if you've ever heard Barney play guitar, you know that he doesn't always cook – or at least not as hotly as other players – but this album is a nice batch of tracks that goes way beyond Kessel's usual uptight sound. Most of the cuts are very long, and they feature open-ended jam ... LP, Vinyl record album
