❔

Great post-Mahavishnu work from guitarist John McLaughlin – the debut of his excellent Shakti combo, a group who mixed Indian music with some tighter fusion moments! The style here is a lot leaner than some of McLaughlin's previous experiments – a small group lineup with violin from L Shankar, plus tabla, percussion, ghantam, mridangam, and John's guitar – all used together in really wonderful ways. The Indian roots of the music are often quite strong, and McLaughlin plays a fair bit of acoustic guitar in a respectful way that never intrudes too much on the other players – a huge change from his jamming fusion of the early 70s. The album features 3 long tracks – "Joy", "Lotus Feet", and "What Need Have I For This".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some surface wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good-
Not to be confused with the other Monk album of the name Misterioso, this one is a live set (which is maybe why they put "recorded on tour" in the title!) – done in quartet format with Charlie Rouse, and either Larry Gales or Butch Warren on bass, and either Ben Riley or Frank ... Wilbert Longmire

With All My Love
Tappan Zee/Columbia, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet later work from guitarist Wilbert Longmire – a warm mixture of soul and funky jazz – and easily one of the better records to come from the Tappan Zee label at the time! Erroll Garner

Concert By The Sea
Columbia, 1955. Near Mint-
One of Erroll Garner's best-selling albums ever – a famous live date recorded in the mid 50s – and a record that's as important to his catalog as the classic Misty! Garner's playing before an apparently large audience, but the recording quality is still nice and clear – a strong ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the last great records by Charles Mingus – a set of extremely compelling original compositions, played by a fresh group of younger players, plus a few older masters! Stanley Clarke

Let Me Know You
Columbia, 1982. Very Good+
Stanley Clarke's a lot more soul-based than fusion here – but that's A-OK with us, because we like this sort of work a lot better than his jamming jazz rock of the 70s! The record's got a great mellow soul vibe – laidback and gently stepping – sometimes in a way that's a bit ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1973. Very Good+
There's a pretty big space between Nothingness & Eternity – but Mahavishnu Orchestra manage to fill most of it up with their hard-jamming approach! Stanley Clarke

Journey To Love
Columbia, 1975. Very Good+
Stanley Clarke may be on a journey to love – but that doesn't mean that the album's too sweet or romantic! Massively funky – and one of Jimmy McGriff's best albums for the Groove Merchant label!
