Stash Christmas Album – 16 Blues & Jazz Classics

LP (Item 469941) Stash, 1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s — Condition: Very Good+
A few decades' worth of rare jazz and blues Christmas tunes – work that starts in the 20s and runs up to the 50s – all of it pretty darn great! There's some obscure numbers on here, and a few hits – and despite a hokey looking cover, the whole thing's pretty well done – thanks to compiler Will Friedwald, who also wrote the notes. Titles include "Jingle Bells" by Benny Goodman, "Christmas Night In Harlem" by Paul Whiteman, "Merry Christmas Baby" by Lionel Hampton, "Silent Night" by Dinah Washington, "Santa Claus Got Stuck In My Chimney" by Ella Fitzgerald, "Cool Yule" by Louis Armstrong, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Harry Reser, "Santa Clause Bring My Man Back" by Ozie Ware with Duke Ellington's Hot Five, "Merry Christmas" by Lightning Hopkins, and "Santa Claus Came In The Spring" by Putney Dandridge & His Swing Band.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Benny Carter

Further Definitions
Impulse, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
A key later album from alto saxophonist Benny Carter – one that has him at the helm of a largeish group, but playing with a nicely focused sort of groove! In addition to Benny's alto, the record also features tenor sax from Charlie Rouse and Coleman Hawkins, plus one more alto from Phil ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1963. Near Mint-
A killer album that's one of Joe's best! Unlike some of his other albums as a vocalist, in which the arrangements are a bit too cluttered to swing, this nice relaxed live set has Joe hitting a very soulful groove, and stepping out nicely on cuts like "Gravy Waltz", "Come Back ... Ornette Coleman

Ornette!
Atlantic, Early 60s. Very Good
A stunning session by Ornette, and one that always seems to get overlooked in discussions of his albums for Atlantic! His quartet here features the amazing Scott LaFaro on bass, and a young Ed Blackwell on drums – both of whom give the tracks an amazing pulse that brings new energy out of ...
