Midnight Sun

LP (Item 4697) Prestige, 1967 — Condition: Very Good+
One of the lesser-known 60s albums from Hammond genius Brother Jack McDuff – a set that features his stunning work on organ in a few different settings! The great Red Holloway is on tenor on most of these cuts – and the young George Benson plays guitar on three, Pat Marino on one more. Joe Dukes provides tremendous work on drums on the small combo tracks – and the set also features one very cool cut with large arrangements from Benny Golson! Tracks are fairly long, with lots of fire from McDuff and Benson – and titles include "Stop It", "Midnight Sun", "Love Walked In", and "Misconstrued".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label pressing – a nice copy!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Screamin'
Prestige, 1962. Very Good+
A real killer from Brother Jack McDuff – one of his first truly great albums, and a record that has him breaking from the sleepier R&B organ sound of the 50s – into the leaner, cleaner mode of the 60s! Blue Haze

Dexter Gordon

Jumpin Blues
Prestige, 1970. Near Mint-
An unusual one from the Dexter's early 70s years – a US session cut with a tighter format than some of Gordon's imports, in a mode that kind of recalls his best Blue Note work of the 60s! The group on the set features Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums – ... LP, Vinyl record album
