Smooth

LP (Item 469416) SOUL, 1978 — Condition: Very Good+
Definitely a good title for this one – given that the album's relatively smooth and mellow overall, and not as all-out rocking or funky as Jr Walker's classic 60s work! But that change is also a nice one – as you can't just wail instrumentals forever – and Walker's almost heading towards pre-smooth jazz territory here by blowing soulfully with a set of gentle backings, often on numbers familiar from other versions. The album does include one great track that has a nice funky undercurrent, and a bit of an edge – the great "Probe Your Mind", easily one of Walker's best from later years. Other tracks include "I Need You Right Now", which features vocals by Thelma Houston – plus "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", "It Takes Two To Make Love", "Climb On Up", "You're On Fire", and "All The Way".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and a promo stamp.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jr Walker & The All Stars

Road Runner
SOUL, 1966. Near Mint-
A stone cooker from Jr Walker – the kind of hard-driving soul that made his 60s Motown work a key link between the Detroit sound of the time, and R&B sounds of earlier years! One of the coolest, funkiest records we've ever heard from Dr John – thanks to lots of guest help from The Meters! Johnny Guitar Watson

Love Jones
DJM, 1980. Near Mint-
One of the last great records by Johnny Guitar Watson – and an album that's got some wonderfully subdued moments, which is a real relief after some of the too-funky bits on some of his other sets from the late 70s! Johnny returns to the tight soul of the mid 70s Fantasy LPs – still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Boz Scaggs

Silk Degrees
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
Blue-eyed soul from Boz Scaggs, with a decidedly Philly influenced sound to the production, which we'd hazard a guess comes more from the Hall & Oates side of town than the Sigma Sound axis.
