❔
An oft-overlooked gem from the JBs – their last album for People Records, and a stone funk classic that's every bit as essential as the others! The band is still in fine fine form – with none of the fast-funk or proto-disco of some later recordings – and they're working here in some really tight song formats that almost go back to the early days of the group's first few singles. The album's filled with great playing, wonderful grooves, and Fred Wesley's keen sense of humor – which sparks the whole set with a sense of warmth and creative play that show why the JBs are still the greatest funk band ever. Includes the excellent "Little Boy Black", which begins with some tasty James Brown vocals; the oft-sampled "Rockin' Funky Watergate"; plus "Step Child", "Makin Love", and "Rice & Ribs". Not as drawn out as Doing It To Death, but more complicated than Food For Thought, and still a totally essential bit of funk!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing – purple label pressing with F/W etch. Cover has light wear, but this is a very nice copy overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Curtis Mayfield

Got To Find A Way
Curtom, 1974. Very Good
A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Page/Solomon Burke

Cool Breeze – Original Soundtrack
MGM, 1972. Near Mint-
Gene Page and Solomon Burke did the music for this obscure blacksploitation film starring Raymond St. Jacques – and although it's not the greatest funky soundtrack you can buy, it's got more than its share of nice moments! There's a bunch of nice instrumentals by Page that are kind of in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

White Heat

White Heat
RCA, 1975. Near Mint-
An obscure side project of Barry White ("White" Heat, get it?) – and a pretty darn tasty batch of ensemble funk tracks! The sound is less White-oriented than some of his other side groups – with a stripped-down sound that doesn't have the strings or large production of any of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freda Payne

Payne & Pleasure
ABC, 1974. Sealed
Genius work from Freda Payne – a set recorded after her bigger fame years for Invictus/Hot Wax – but a record that's done with an even deeper feel overall! The album features some key contributions from Lamont Dozier – who wasn't credited on the original record, due to his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Giving Up On Love
Vee Jay, 1963. Sealed
Classic Vee Jay material by The Iceman, and some of the most sophisticated soul you'll ever hear! The album features some great singles and more obscure material – tracks that really show Jerry Butler coming into his own as a solo act, after leaving The Impressions. Titles include his great ... Otis Redding

Tell The Truth
Atco, 1970. Near Mint-
In the years after his death, when Otis Redding had approached near-deity status, Atlantic was digging through their vaults (recently swiped from Stax!) to find whatever they could to put together a record. Fortunately, most of the material they came up with was great – as you'll hear on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Esther Phillips

For All We Know
Kudu, 1975. Near Mint-
Smooth and sophisticated grooving from Esther Phillips – a record that really has her shaking off the rag-tag and rootsy modes of earlier years, and gliding sweetly into the mainstream! Phillips' vocals are still as soulful and compelling as ever, but the backings are quite full – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Jackson

Thriller
Epic, 1982. Very Good+ Gatefold
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phil Upchurch

Phil Upchurch
Marlin, 1978. Near Mint-
One of the sweetest fusion sets ever recorded from guitarist Phil Upchurch – a set that's less trippy than his earlier albums, but one that more than makes up for that with a tightly soulful groove! Production is by John Tropea and George Benson – and you can definitely hear their ... LP, Vinyl record album
