Magic Bird Of Fire/West Side Story (Medley)

12-inch (Item 469131) Salsoul, 1977 — Condition: Used

12-inch, Vinyl record

A stone stunner and a sleeper from Salsoul Orchestra – both of them great! "Magic Bird" has a very similar feel to Earth Wind & Fire's "Getaway" – stepping out with a soaring and righteous groove. The flip's way better than you might expect, a 7 minute mostly-instrumental medley of tunes from West Side Story, taken to all new funky territory by Vince Montana and crew! The tunes roll out in ways that are hardly familiar – and slide together nicely with lots of jazzy touches on the instrumentation – miles from Broadway, and totally sweet for the clubs! (White label promo in a Salsoul sleeve. Labels have some marker.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A club/boogie number lifted from Joe's Mestizo album – not really his greatest work, but with a decent enough dancefloor groove. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Classic 12" version of this one! "Oh Honey" is a killer, with a great spacey soul sound, and a monster sample on the intro. This version is 6 minutes long – a real treat! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Paisley Park, 1987. Near Mint- (pic cover)
Sure, the politics seem a bit silly now – but the track's still one of Prince's last really compelling hits. It's got a totally infectious hook, a spare Timmy Thomas-ish beat, and a strangely captivating vocal that really sticks with us. The flip's a bit silly – a 10 minute extended ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Not the famous "Ling Ching Tong" tune of doo wop fame, but a new track by Joe from his Latin disco years. The track's got a Salsoul type beat, but Joe's sticking to his Latin soul approach with the lyrics – despite the modern sound of the production and backings. Marty Sheller ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
AVI, 1980. Very Good+ (pic cover)
Back in the day, Chicago never had much of a rap scene – which is why it was so easy for Chicago radio DJ Casper to score big with this little groover on the AVI label! The cut's actually not bad as sort of a funky clubby track – and Casper's rapping style reminds us a lot of Gary Byrd ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

A gem of a disco track – later than most of the Salsoul Orchestra's hits, but handled by Patrick Adams with a soulful groove that makes Loleatta Holloway's vocals come off wonderfully! Remix by Shep Pettibone. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Larry Levan worked some incredible magic with Skyy's "Skyzoo" – turning a simple funk tune into a massive bit of dancefloor groove! What can we say? This is a classic! The track has a monster roller skating groove that's been sampled more than a few times over the years – but which still sounds incredible on its own!
