❔

A solid entry from Edwin Starr's late 70s comeback into the clubs – a set that's miles from his harder soul for Motown, but which still has some pretty great vocals overall! Edwin's working here with Lamont Dozier, who helps bring his Detroit groove into smoother California territory – and while the approach isn't as full-on as on Dozier's own records of the time, it's still pretty darn great overall – filled with just the right mellow soul touches to balance out some of the more uptempo grooves, and recorded in a way that never dampens the spirits of Starr's vocals. Titles include "Jealous", "Contact", "I'm So Into You", "Storm Clouds On The Way", "Don't Waste Your Time", and "Working Song".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Love Unlimited Orchestra

White Gold
20th Century, 1974. Very Good
A wonderful album of funky instrumental tracks from Barry White – often overlooked because of the "greatest hits" association you could make with the "gold" in the title. The record's got that perfect Love Unlimited sound – heavy beats underneath, and the orchestra ... LP, Vinyl record album

Leon Haywood

Keep It In The Family
20th Century, 1974. Sealed
Leon's moving from the rawer soul of his earlier days, but he still hasn't hit the sly LA funk sound of his "Freaky To You" years. The record's a good batch of tracks that show the LA sound of the 60s turning into the smooth slinky one of the 70s – and Gene Page is at hand to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sydney Joe Qualls

So Sexy
20th Century, 1979. Near Mint-
An incredible blend of southern and modern soul – the second album by soul songwriter Sydney Joe Qualls, recorded in both Chicago and Muscle Shoals, with a stone mellow sound that's outta site! The groove here is extremely well-done – tight, but never too slick – and with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

20th Century, 1973. Near Mint-
Great stuff from the girls who first put Barry White on the map! The record is the group's second – and by this point, Barry had developed that tight snapping drum sound that made his orchestral albums work so well. You'll hear it to good effect on most songs on the LP, which have a great ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kinsman Dazz

Kinsman Dazz
20th Century, 1978. Sealed
A killer debut from the Dazz Band – issued way back when they were named Kinsman Dazz, and when "dazz" was a reference to the fact that the group could play both dance music and jazz! That jazzy element is definitely in place here – as the set's got lots of hip instrumental ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bar-Kays

Black Rock
Volt, 1971. Near Mint-
An album that's every bit as great as the title might imply – heavy guitar-based funk from the second version of The Bar-Kays – one that uses the new instrumental focus to push a groove that's much more black rock than before! There's still a bit of trumpet from the past, but the sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Henderson

Solid
Buddah, 1976. Very Good
The very first album from Michael Henderson – but a set that already finds him very much at the top of his game – thanks to previous work with Miles Davis and Norman Connors! Both artists gave Henderson a chance to do different things with his music, and by the time of this record, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Irene Reid

Room For One More
Verve, 1965. Near Mint-
Although Irene Reid later went on to make some recordings that had her in a more rootsy setting, this nice set from the mid 60's features her deep soul voice amidst classy jazz-based arrangements by Oliver Nelson. The record's got the feel of one of Nancy Wilson's classics for Capitol, with a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album
Edsel (UK), Mid 60s/1984. Near Mint-
An excellent compilation that brings together some of Ben's harder to find "uptown soul" singles from his middle period Atlantic recordings. This one's way better than any of the "best of" comps of Ben's work, and it really shows how great a soul singer he was apart from his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Goodman & Brown

Ray, Goodman, & Brown
Polydor, 1979. Near Mint-
Sweet silky harmony soul from the trio of Harry Ray, Billy Brown, and Al Goodman – the group's first album under a new name – after some previous indie work as The Moments! The album's got the group really stepping up with a rich new sound – drawing on all the best elements of ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
Like the first volume, this isn't so much a collection of "oldies" so much as it is a tasty set of hard to find numbers from the United Artists label – including some killer soul and jazz numbers that are pretty darn hard to track down on LP. The record features two great ones from ... LP, Vinyl record album
