Wanting You

LP (Item 468672) Chocolate City, 1981 — Condition: Very Good+
Massive work from Starpoint – the kind of all-great record that few other groups of their era could hope to match! The set's got way more going on than usual the usual 80s groove (although that's very firmly in place too) – and steps out with a tightness and sense of presence that makes the whole thing sparkle from start to finish! By the time of this set, Starpoint had really gotten their groove down – and work here as a key link between the bassier groups of the boogie era and some of the hipper ensemble funk combos of the mid 70s scene. The Phillips brothers and Kayode Adeyemo provide impeccable instrumentation throughout – and as before, the lead vocals of Renee Diggs do a tremendous job of pulling the whole album together! Titles include "Wanting You", "Try Me", "Shake It Out", "Do What You Wanna Do", "Angel", "Last Night", and "Starnite You Nite".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Calling All Beatniks
Passport, 1984. Near Mint-
Post-August Darnell work by Dr Buzzard's Savannah Band – no longer using the "original" in their name! There's still a retro-styled feel here overall – with some of the swing-esque modes of earlier albums, but also a bit of rockabilly as well – an element that kind of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Ocean

Tear Down These Walls
Jive, 1988. Near Mint-
A big one for Billy Ocean – and a set that has the singer sounding even more confident and powerful than ever before! Two Places At The Same Time
Arista, 1980. Very Good+
Solid funky work from Ray Parker Jr & Raydio – a set that's lean and focused, and still very much in the earlier Raydio groove! A seminal set of work from the Blue Note scene of the 60s – a record that's not just noteworthy for its role in helping return tenorist Dexter Gordon to the spotlight, but also for the fantastic work of pianist Sonny Clark in the quartet! Jimmy McGriff

Groove Grease
Groove Merchant, 1971. Near Mint-
A nice bit of funky organ work from Jimmy McGriff – a set that's got his famous talents on the Hammond out front of a larger ensemble – but in a way that's very different than some of his albums of that type from the 70s! There's lots of electricity in the mix – electric piano ... LP, Vinyl record album

A warm set of soulful 60s numbers from Eddie Harris – almost a ballad album at times, but with a groovier feel overall!
