Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr — I Hope We Get To Love In Time (with bonus tracks) ... CD 14.99
The first album from the team of Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr – and a set that's arguably even more soulful than their work together in The 5th Dimension! The pair are lucky to have Groovesville soul maestro Don Davis at the helm – helping them hit a more mature, more contemporary sound that mixes equal parts club rhythms with some of the smoother styles of the late 5th Dimension years. McCoo's vocals are especially wonderful – classy, but always quite heartfelt – at a level that almost comes across like some of the best Philly International vocalists of the same period – especially on the soaring disco numbers! Titles include "You Can't Change My Heart", "You Don't Have To Be A Star", "We've Got To Get It On Again", "Easy Way Out", "My Love For You", and "I Hope We Get To Love In Time".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cut corner, light wear, and a few small stains.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Marilyn & Billy
Columbia, 1978. Sealed
Endearing pop soul from Marilyn & Billy! This warm, friendly self-titled third album –since we're all friends by now, it's first names only, thank you very much – is sweet as can be, though relatively underappreciated all these years later! This one's co-produced by Billy and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Four Tops

Main Street People
Dunhill/ABC, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Really nice work from The Four Tops – proof that they were still going quite quite strong after Motown! The album's got a hip sound that shows the group moving through a wider range of emotions than we ever remember – crafting rich deep harmonies that still stand apart from the big ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1975. Very Good+
Great work by one of the archetypal funky soul bands of the 70s – and a group whose impact is still being felt today! Of course, one of the reasons for that is Chaka Khan's incredible vocals – caught here at a prime early point, and very nicely set against some warm electric keyboards ... LP, Vinyl record album

Denise LaSalle

Bitch Is Bad
ABC, 1977. Near Mint-
From the title of this one, you can tell that Denise is going for a bit of late 70s Mille Jackson action – mixing the rougher styles of her roots with some more sophisticated backings – all in a proto-feminist mode that always comes out with the lady on the top! Production is by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Floaters

Magic
ABC, 1978. Near Mint-
The second album from The Floaters – and just as bit a mellow soul classic as their first! The group still have an incredibly sweet harmony sound that easily beats the best of the rest of the harmony crowd at the time – and they sound especially great on the album's mellower tunes, ... Johnny Nash

Studio Time
ABC, 1961. Very Good+
Very early work from Johnny Nash – singing here in a mix of vocal jazz and some of the soul styles that he would head towards in the years to come! Arrangements are by Sid Feller, who also produced. LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Live In Concert
ABC, 1964. Near Mint-
A classic live set from Ray Charles – one that equally showcases all the best sides of his sound in the mid 60s! The group's got a nice dose of jazz – which it shows right at the start – almost a mix of Basie swing and R&B, of the sort that Ray was sporting heavily in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles & Betty Carter

Ray Charles & Betty Carter
ABC, 1961. Very Good+
A classic album of soul duets – and one of the deeper records cut by Betty during the 60s! The arrangements are by the great Marty Paich, and although there's some singers in the background, the overall sound is still pretty nice and soulful. Betty's high voice works well with Ray's raspy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

Right On Time
ABC/Charly (UK), Early 60s. Very Good
A nice Charly compilation of some Curtis Mayfield's best numbers with the Impressions, 16 numbers in all including "It's All Right", "Gypsy Woman", "Talking About My Baby", "Right On Time", "Never Let Me Go", "I've Been Trying", "Emoti ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, Mid 60s. Very Good
Original best of collection issued by ABC at the time when the group was still riding high on their label! The album contains 11 classic tracks – all penned by Curtis Mayfield, with great Chisoul arrangements by Johnny Pate. Cuts include "Too Slow", "I Loved & Lost", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sculpture, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
Early stuff by Sly – and pretty nice! The mix of styles is mostly hard soul, a bit jazz, and tiny roots of Sly's later funky style – and the record has a lot of cuts that may not be as great as Sly's Epic recordings, but which would sound pretty darn nice if they were on an obscure 45! ... Average White Band

Vol VIII
Atlantic, Mid 70s/1980. Near Mint-
The notes to this one say "This album gives the listener a rare opportunity to taste the past and present of the Average White Band." What does that mean? Well, it means that the band only came up with 4 new songs for the record – including "Kiss Me", "Love Won't ... LP, Vinyl record album
