Lionel Hampton — You Better Know It !!! ... CD 24.99
A warm and wonderful 60s session from Lionel Hampton – recorded in a personal and intimate way, one that even surpasses his great small combo sides of the 50s! There's a relaxed feel here that you don't always get with Hamp – a gently grooving quality that we really like a lot, and which is traditional, but never too staid or too "easy" in its choices. The set benefits from some really strong horn work from Clark Terry on trumpet and Ben Webster on tenor – the latter of whom really crackles out with a great sound here. Other players include Milt Hinton on bass, Hank Jones on piano, and Osie Johnson on drums – and there's also a very slight bit of vocalizing on the record as well. Titles include "Tempo's Birthday", "Vibraphone Blues", "Trick Or Treat", "Cute", "Swingle Jingle", and "Taste Of Honey".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo rainbow label pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has some gloss separation on the spine, but looks great overall.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Clef, Early 50s. Very Good+
Great Verve material from Lionel Hampton – and like most of his sides for the label, a set that offers small combo grooving in a very stretched out setting! Hampton's vibes are set up nicely with a trio that includes Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

There It Is
Brunswick, 1972. Very Good+
A great little set of instrumental tracks from Lionel Hampton – almost more soul than jazz, and set to some hipper than usual Brunswick Records arrangements – by the likes of Eugene Record, Willie Henderson, Sonny Sanders, and Hamilton Bohannon! The setting is a great showcase for Hamp' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lionel Hampton Quintet
Clef, 1954. Very Good
One of these excellent early 50s albums that Hamp cut for Verve – most of which feature him like this, stretching out a lot more than in the early days, working with a small combo of top-line players that each get plenty of room to solo. Players include Buddy Rich, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Klemmer

Intensity
Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Fantastic work from John Klemmer – hard-edged, exploratory, with a mix of spiritualism and soulfulness, and a few touches of easy soloing. Todd Cochran (Bayete) plays Fender Rhodes, Woody Theus is on drums, and Klemmer's got an echoplex hooked up to his tenor on a few cuts. The tracks were ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great counterpart to some of Archie Shepp's studio albums for Impulse – a live date recorded in San Francisco, with a slightly freer, sharper edge! John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! Spirit of 1976
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of a rare few albums issued by hip LA vibist Emil Richards as a leader – a hell of a talent who also did a lot of studio work, but one that we really love when he gets a chance to step out front and shine! The set was recorded at Donte's, a very groovy club in the city – and in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! John Coltrane

Ballads
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – but which still has some of the depth of soul that John Coltrane brought to his more experimental work on Impulse Records! The album's a classic introduction to the ... LP, Vinyl record album
