II-V7-I Progression Vol 3

LP (Item 46464) JA Records, 1978 — Condition: Used

One of many fine records cut for the Jamey Aebersold label of jazz improvisation/instruction albums – and one that features some excellent piano work by Dan Haerle. The piano is all acoustic, but it's got a freely soulful feel that makes the album way more than just a jazz instruction album – and the best cuts have a tight trio groove and lots of nice bass work by Rufus Reid. Titles include "G Minor Blues", "Bebop Tune", "F Blues with An 8 Bar Bridge", "II V7 I", "II V7", and "0 V7 9". (Missing the book.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An early version of this one – with either Chuck Marohnic or David Lahm on piano, Don Baldwin or Tyrone Brown on bass, and Stan Gage or Charlie Craig on drums. LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
An overlooked gem from the Verve bossa years – a session that features the sweet tenor sax work of Stan Getz, alongside some swinging bossa arrangements from the great Gary McFarland! Given the strength of Gary's own work for Verve at the time, it's no surprise that he's a perfect ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Yusef Lateef
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint-
One of our favorite Atlantic albums by the great Yusef Lateef – an incredible session that has him dipping back into his earlier exotic roots with those great reed styles of the early 60s – yet also hitting a mix of soul and funk like some of his other albums from the time! The sound ... LP, Vinyl record album
Drum Is A Woman
Columbia, 1956. Near Mint-
A hokey cover and title, but a hip little record from Duke Ellington – kind of a story of percussion and jazz, all wrapped together with some great vocals and narration! The format is kind of far-reaching, but never too stuffy – and in a way, the album offers a great opportunity to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Choice, 1973. Near Mint-
Overlooked 70s work from Jimmy Giuffre – a hip trio session that has all the free elements of his earlier recordings, but possibly an even greater focus on tone! Jimmy plays a range of reeds here – tenor, clarinet, and flute – and he works with bass and drum accompaniment, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Solo Flight
Pablo, 1977. Very Good+
A great mix of bluesy rhythms and sensitive sounds from Ray Bryant – a later solo set that really shows the full range of his skills on the piano! The album's nicely unfettered – opened up in that pure Pablo way – and although Ray plays passages that hint at his soul jazz roots, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantis
Saturn, Late 60s. Near Mint- (reissue)
An incredible record from Sun Ra! The session was recorded in New York in the late 60s – and it features Ra playing the "solar sound instrument", which is actually a modified Hohner Clavinet, used here with some really spooky sounds! The setting of the album is spare and moody ... LP, Vinyl record album
Still Live
ECM, 1986. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Wonderful trio work from Keith Jarrett – a format that the pianist returned to strongly in the 80s, after really breaking fresh ground as a solo artist in the 70s! The music here is hardly the trio styles of most of Jarrett's contemporaries, as there's lots of lessons learned from the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Alligator Bogaloo
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+
Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Get Up With It
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Miles Davis' last studio session before a few years of seclusion – and a really monumental effort, probably the baddest of the electric period! The album does a great job of capturing the energy of the frenzied live sets from that time, and matching it with Teo Macero's cut and paste editing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Open House
Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good+
Material that was recorded in the early 60s, but not issued by Blue Note until later in the decade – when they were pulling out any Jimmy Smith session they had, in order to compete with the bigger hits on Verve. The record features 4 extended tracks, with an all-star jam session lineup that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Follow Your Heart
Solid Smoke, Mid 60s/1981. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent (and out of print) compilation of the Manhattans' incredible early singles on the Carnival label.
