A later album by Jimmy – recorded in a smooth slick jazz funk mode, a bit like the style that Jimmy Smith used on some of his Mercury recordings. The organ of Jimmy is augmented by keyboards played by Pat Rebillot and Paul Griffin – which makes for a nice mix of organ and electric piano sounds, plus some occasional moog that's very nicely placed! If you're not looking for full out funk, this is actually a great little album – with some wonderful little steppers that come across in a cool mellow jazz funk way. Titles include "Flexible Flyer", "Sky Hawk", "Grandma's Toe Jam", and "Bullfrog". (Cover has a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Topkapi
Sue, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A very unusual album for Jimmy – but a great one too! The set breaks the mode of Jimmy's small combo Sue work and features his organ amidst some larger arrangements from Fred Norman – a blend of skipping strings and jazzy rhythms that really lets Jimmy open up and groove around the top ... Electric Funk
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever – a sweeeeet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts – and a record that ranks right up there with the mighty Soul Sugar for sheer funkiness! Jimmy takes an upbeat and easygoing approach to the late 60s funk sound, with a nice, rubbery bass and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Man-Child
Columbia, 1975. Very Good-
Funky mid 70s Herbie – one his funkiest of the era! Herbie plays a host of kool keyboards (like Fender Rhodes, Arp, Hohner Clavinet, etc), and he's joined by a group that includes just about all of the Headhunters (Paul Jackson and Mike Clark in the rhythm section), as well as Wah Wah Watson ... Lonesome Traveler
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
An excellent example of the massive groove that Ray Bryant set up during his 60s years at Cadet – a simple soul jazz trio style, but augmented with dual horn backing – which makes for a tightly stepping sound that's all-soulful, all the way! Bryant's left hand is nice and hard on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hair Is Beautiful
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
A sweet sweet groover from Barney Kessel – his own hip take on the soundtrack for Hair – all those wonderful songs originally penned by the great Galt MacDermot! Barney's got an extra-trippy feel on some of the best cuts – a wider sound on his guitar, which rings out nicely ... LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1972. Very Good
One of Ornette Coleman's best recordings from the 70s – and like his other album for Columbia, quite a change from the freewheeling sounds he was blowing over at Blue Note! Porgy & Bess
Columbia, 1958. Very Good-
Way more than just a simple version of work from Porgy & Bess – and instead, a key collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans – done with a sound that really transforms the tunes! True, the work here is all based on George Gershwin's original compositions – but through ... LP, Vinyl record album
