Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet

LP (Item 46287) Riverside, 1957 — Condition: Sealed
Also available
Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet — Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet ... CD 9.99

Hard to find Riverside LP of this group led by Gigi Gryce running down nice hard bop numbers. There's no dry academic performances here, not that you'd guess that from the line-up, but the title kind of leads you in that direction. Donald Byrd and Gryce are playing nice and hard up front, with Wade Legge on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass and Art Taylor on drums cooking nicely in the rhythm section. The tracks include Legge's "Geraldine" and Gryce's "Minority" plus "Love For Sale", "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart", "Straight Ahead", and "Wake Up!".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed OJC pressing!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Art Blakey

Kyoto
Riverside, 1964. Near Mint-
Quite possibly the best of the non-Blue Note Blakey sides from the early 60s – and an excellent outing from the sextet version of the Jazz Messengers that included Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, and Reggie Workman! The format here is a big tighter than some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Good Bait
Riverside, Early 50s. Very Good
Late 60s issue of some material that was recorded early in the producing career of Orrin Keepnews – and which features Navarro in the company of a hip group of boppers like Allan Eager, Curly Russell, Kenny Clarke, and Tadd Dameron. One of those ubiquitous Milestone 70s two-fers combining two nice sides from the little giant. Cannonbal Adderley Quintet Plus
Riverside, 1962. Very Good+
An all-star set from Cannonball Adderley – a hip standout in his pre-Capitol years for Riverside! The "plus" in the title is pianist Wynton Kelly – who works with the group wonderfully on 4 of the album's 6 tracks – bringing in a slightly different feel on the keys than ... LP, Vinyl record album
