Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab Quintet

LP (Item 46287) Riverside, 1957 — Condition: Very Good-
Hard to find Riverside LP of this group led by Gigi Gryce running down nice hard bop numbers. There's no dry academic performances here, not that you'd guess that from the line-up, but the title kind of leads you in that direction. Donald Byrd and Gryce are playing nice and hard up front, with Wade Legge on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass and Art Taylor on drums cooking nicely in the rhythm section. The tracks include Legge's "Geraldine" and Gryce's "Minority" plus "Love For Sale", "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart", "Straight Ahead", and "Wake Up!".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(White label pressing with blue text and deep groove. Cover has light surface wear, small split on spine, aging, and some faint staining with stuck-on paper on the bottom back cover.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Riverside, 1959. Sealed
A record that hides a bit under its title and cover – looking like a songbook session, and without Chet Baker's dreamy face on the front – but one that stands every bit as strongly with Baker's other late 50s sessions for Riverside, and done with an equally nice set of New York elements ... Bill Evans

Portrait In Jazz
Riverside, 1959. Sealed
A classic set to feature the Bill Evans Trio with the great Scott Lafaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums! Listening to the set we're reminded of what always brings us back to Evans' playing – a quality that's often described as moody, but which is really is quite spry and lively throughout ... Riverside, 1962. Near Mint-
Rock-solid live material from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet – a combo who could usually groove even better on a concert date then they could in the studio! The album's one of a number of key live sides from Cannon in the 60s – and although it pre-dates his work on Capitol, it's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside, 1958. Very Good
Everybody Digs Bill Evans – or at least it certainly seems that way from the cover endorsements by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, and Ahmad Jamal – but the real proof is in the record, and the set is a great one from Bill's classic years on Riverside! Evans is at the peak of his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Taylor

Warming Up
Riverside, 1960. Very Good+
One of Billy's rarest sessions from the 60s – a trio set for Riverside, recorded in early 1960, and a great little session considering how obscure it is! The group's a trio, with Henry Grimes on bass and Ray Mosca on drums – supporting Billy's fluidly soulful work on the keys, over a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy Gwaltney's Kansas City Nine with Buck Clayton

Goin To Kansas City
Riverside, 1960. Very Good
Trad revival material by this group that featured Buck Claton on trumpet, Dickie Wells on trombone, Tommy Newson on tenor, Charlie Byrd on guitar, and Gwaltney on alto, clarinet, and vibes. Benny Golson

Killer Joe
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A fantastic album from tenor legend Benny Golson – one in which he reinvents his sound for the 70s, but still keeps all the tight sense of arrangement we loved in his earlier work! Benny's going for a funky jazz groove on most cuts – a bit clubby, in a Kudu Records mode – with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McGriff

Something To Listen To
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+
An obscure little album by Jimmy – a real lost session that kind of fell between his Blue Note and Solid State years. The set's got Jimmy grooving in 2 different modes – one a more traditional soul jazz organ style, similar to other 60s work, but almost tighter; the other a freer, ... LP, Vinyl record album
