Tjader

LP (Item 4623) Fantasy, Late 60s — Condition: Very Good+
An excellent album from legendary vibist Cal Tjader – and one of his truly electric albums! A key factor to the greatness of this one is keyboardist Al Zulaica – who plays some amazing Fender Rhodes on the album, really unlocking a whole new sound of Cal's vibes in the process! The blend of keys and vibes is amazing – a sound that sets a new standard for the 70s – and the rest of the group here features a range of percussion players, a bit of flute, and three trumpets that buoy up the grooves nicely from the bottom! Titles include Cal's classic "I Showed Them", a great reading of "Evil Ways", and the cuts "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", "Fresh Air", "She's Leaving Home", and "Mambero".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label Full Radial Stereo pressing. Vinyl has light sleeve marks. Cover is nice.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A real classic by Cal – one of the trademark albums of his time at Verve, and a unique blend of jazz, Latin, and other groovy influences! The tunes have that lightly jazzy approach that made Cal a hit with the radio and jukebox crowds at the time – a bossa-influenced mix of vibes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of Cal Tjader
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Cal cut so many great sides for Verve during the 60s, it's hard to imagine how anyone could come up with a "best of" – but this album fits the bill nicely, and includes a number of solid groover and Latin jazz tracks that fit just right! Includes "Sake & Greens", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A second volume of Duke Ellington material from Kenny Burrell – and like the first, an extremely fresh look at the tunes – given the way things change up throughout the sessions! Fantasy, 1950. Very Good

Fantasy, 1955. Near Mint-
A pretty hip set of big band arrangements – very much along the lines of early 50s Stan Kenton, with a tight swing, but a nicely modern undercurrent as well! The arrangements, as the title indicates, are all by Gerry Mulligan – and in addition to the piano of Elliot Lawrence, players ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck Octet
Fantasy, Early 50s. Near Mint-
A full LP that combines early work by Dave Brubeck – pulled together from a few 10" LPs, and packaged in a nice cartoony cover. Bill Evans & Eddie Gomez

Montreux III
Fantasy, 1975. Near Mint-
Spare magic from Bill Evans – an album recorded at the Montreux Jazz Fest in 1975, as a set of sensitive duets with Eddie Gomez – on cuts that feature Bill playing both acoustic and electric piano! Stanley Turrentine

Pieces Of Dreams
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A 70s soulful classic from the mighty Stanley Turrentine! Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Very Good+
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! Nice 2LP set of Mingus' work for Impulse, with a fair complement of stuff that he did for the label – including the entire LP's worth of material from Black Saint & The Sinner Lady (which is always his toughest to find).
