Beginnings

LP (Item 462075) EmArcy, Mid/Late 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
Excellent bop sides cut for EmArcy by Cannonball, collected and assembled in a manner that showcases his wonderfully soulful and hard blowing approach to the alto in the years before Miles recruited him. The set features a host of great sidemen including brother Nat, JJ Johnson, Cecil Payne, Ernie Royal, John Coltrane, Junior Mance, Horace Silver, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Keeter Betts, Sam Jones, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach and Jimmy Cobb. 17 tracks in all, including "Hurrican Connie", "Cynthia's In Love", "Cannonball", "Nat's Everglade", "Fallen Feathers", "Watermelon", "Fort Lauderdale", "Broadway At Basin Street", "T's Tune", "Blues For Bohemia", "Specutacular", "Miss Jackie's Delight", "Hoppin' John", "The Way You Look Tonight", "I'll Remember April", "Limehouse Blues" and "The Sleeper".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mid 70s issue. Cover has some ringwear and yellowing from age.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cannonball Adderley

Somethin' Else (70s pressing)
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good+
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a ... Mercury, 1959. Very Good+
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Price You Got To Pay To Be Free
Capitol, 1970. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! The set's a double-length gem that presents the group in an open live setting – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+
A great lost chapter in the Cannonball/David Axelrod story! The record features Cannon's classic quintet performing some longer, more serious works with orchestral backing – and the sound is vaguely similar to some of Axelrod's "high concept" work for Capitol. The record features ... LP, Vinyl record album
EmArcy, Early 50s. Very Good+
A rare Emarcy session as a leader from this tremendous tenorist – with some tracks that have Ben Webster in a small group with John Kirby on bass, Benny Carter on alto, and Maynard Ferguson on trumpet – and three more with larger arrangements from Johnny Richards! LP, Vinyl record album
EmArcy, 1955. Near Mint-
A strong 50s session from Gerry – a bit like some of his work for the Pacific Jazz label, but perhaps a bit more biting and modern. The group's a sextet with Jon Eardley on trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor, Dave Bailey on drums, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, and Peck Morrison on bass – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Quinichette

Vice Pres (10 inch LP)
EmArcy, Early 50s. Good
Some of the greatest work as a leader ever cut by tenorist Paul Quinichette – longtime Basie alum, and a key player who was the "Vice Pres" next to Lester Young's "Pres". The record is one of the best full-length albums by Quinichette from the early days – titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Mainstream Of Jazz
EmArcy, 1956. Very Good+
Gerry Mulligan's still far from the mainstream of jazz on this sweet little set – a great date that expands nicely from the mellower styles of the Pacific Jazz years – expanding the group a bit, with some really great results! In addition to Mulligan's usual baritone sax, Gerry also ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of a number of excellent 50s American releases by Swedish baritonist Lars Gullin – a 4 track 10" LP that features backing by a septet that includes Putte Wickman, Ake Persson, Bengt Hallberg, and George Riedel. The tracks are a bit longer than usual for Gullin – making for a ... LP, Vinyl record album

A brilliant album that proves that even at the height of his success, Lee Morgan was one of the freest thinkers on Blue Note – always coming up with fresh ideas that continued to grow his talents! A very famous moment from Dizzy Gillespie – tracks from his famous concert at Salle Pleyel, in Paris, from 1953!
