Jug Sessions

LP (Item 462069) Mercury, Late 40s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold

Early work from Gene Ammons – his obscure late 40s recordings for Mercury Records – mostly from the 78rpm years! Sidemen include Junior Mance, Albert Ammons, Israel Crosby, Gene Wright and lesser known Chicago locals like Wes Landers, Leo Blevins, Jess Miller and Ernest McDonald. As you'd expect the blowing is is nice and soulful, but nice and concise with the shorter takes that groups were doing in the era for the recording formats of the day. 28 numbers in all, including "Concentration", "Red Top", "Idaho", "Shufflin The Boogie", "McDougal's Sprout", "Hold That Money", "Shermanski", "Harold The Fox", "Jeet Jet", "Odd-En-Dow", "Going For The Okey Doak", 'Blowing The Family Jewels", "Dues In Blues", "Daddy Sauce's Airlines", "ABdullah's Fiesta", "Brother Jug's Sermon" and "Little Slam".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, Early 50s. Very Good+
Nice nice album on Prestige, bringing together Jug's earlier sides in 2 different settings. The first batch has Ammons "battling" Sonny Stitt in a set of stuff that features hard twin tenors in the frontline, with the kind of cutting contests the two of them would perform live all over ... Mercury, 1958. Very Good-
A key album in the development of the flute in jazz – issued under the Swingin Shepherds name to cash in on the fame of that popular hit of the time! The album's a bit more serious and conceptual than you might guess from the title and cover image – and follows strongly on the approach ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Jaspar & His All Stars
Mercury, Mid 50s. Very Good
American release of this session by the famous French tenor and reed player, with backing by French players like Rene Urtreger, Sacha Distel, and Jean Louis Viale. Jimmy Smith

It's Necessary
Mercury, 1977. Very Good+
One of Jimmy's last albums for a major label in the 70s – a real back-to-basics set that was recorded live at the Jimmy Smith Supper Club in LA – the "home of fried cornbread and live jazz", and a venue that we certainly wish we could have visited! Jimmy's working here with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

Nightflight
Mercury, 1976. Very Good
Wonderful 70s work from Gabor Szabo – a record that has him picking up a bit more of a soulful undercurrent, while still keeping all his great guitar work nicely upfront! EmArcy/Mercury, Mid 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
First volume pulled together in the early 80s of Brownie's remarkable work with a smoking quintet that would record some of the finest bop sides issued on the Emarcy label. Bob Brookmeyer

Jazz Is A Kick (Trip)
Mercury, Late 50s. Sealed
An overlooked gem from trombonist Bob Brookmeyer – a rare one-off date for Mercury Records, and one of his grooviest sessions from the time! The set's got Bob working with a slightly larger group than usual – his own trombone out front of the mix, swinging nicely in a mix of modern-styl ... LP, Vinyl record album

Turning Point
Mercury, 1963. Near Mint-
An incredible, and oft-overlooked album from the great Benny Golson – and one of the few early albums that really point the way to his huge run of work for decades to come! Moon Faced & Starry Eyed
Mercury, 1959. Very Good+
One of Max's many great records from the late 50's, most of which tend to get overlooked in favor of his more experimental sessions. The group here includes Ray Bryant, Stanley Turrentine, Julian Priester, and Turrentine's great brother Tommy – and they're joined by Abbey Lincoln on vocals ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1951/1952. Very Good
You know, we've never been sure what they mean by "collates" in the title of this one – but we're guessing the title was chosen because of the way Johnny blows sheets and sheets of sweet sound together on alto sax! The recordings are in an Ellington mode, but taken to a small group ... LP, Vinyl record album
