Love Is

LP (Item 4610) MCA, 1981 — Condition: Very Good
A totally massive set from One Way – a record that has them sounding even better than ever – drawing on all the strengths of the previous few records, and really knocking it out of the park! Although the group's got a great way with a groove, the mellow cuts here are equally nice – including the sublime title number, which begins the set as a sweet stepper – then lets the grooves pick up pace as things move on. Everything's nicely restrained – no overdone boogie modes, or too-funky rhythms that would usually show up on a set like this – and if anything, One Way should be given plenty of props for not just going for the dancefloor – and really coming up with a richly-voiced album like this! Titles include "Love Is", "My Lady", "Wait Until Tomorrow", "Push", "I Didn't Mean to Break Your Heart", and "All Over Again".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Labels have a bit of marker.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ready For The World
MCA, 1985. Near Mint-
Classic post-Prince commercial 80s soul! Even though Prince, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and even Andre Cymone are nowhere in sight, this classic 80s LP could just as well have come out of Minneapolis as Flint, Michigan, and we mean that in the best possible way. Imagination

Body Talk
MCA, 1981. Very Good
An 80s soul classic from Imagination – one of the few groups who could manage to take silly costumes, electronic rhythms, and goofy covers – and some how manage to come up with a rock-solid set of soul! This album's great proof of that fact – as it's initially got an off-putting ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Brown

King Of Stage
MCA, 1986. Sealed
Bobby Brown's out to put his New Edition past firmly behind him here – stepping out in a range of pop soul numbers that still have a sound that's as fresh as his late teen look on the cover! A great follow-up to War's first Music Band album – and proof that the group was still plenty darn funky at the end of the 70s! Although different from their original Chicano funk groove, the style here is still totally great – long, drawn-out funk that's filled with plenty of sharp ... LP, Vinyl record album

This nice soulful sleeper was not that recognized in the 70s, but in the 90s, it's become a huge favorite in the Chicago's steppers scene, thanks to the excellent two-step groover "Love's Gonna Last". It's a great cut, with sweet soulful vocals, and a totally catchy midtempo groove ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ellen McIlwaine

We the People
Polydor, 1973. Very Good+
Wonderful work from the great Ellen McIllwaine! Ellen's certainly not a soul artist – but she's got a particularly soulful approach to folk rock – one that's made her a favorite of groovers worldwide in the past few decades, thanks to a big push from Gilles Peterson, and the club scene ... Man, it must have been something to hear this record blasting out of a boombox back in the old days – especially if it was the magenta-hued one on the cover!
