Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play,
but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic,
with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a
cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner
and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay,
though probably with surface noise.
Additional Marks & Notes
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially
if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record.
This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip,
cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
Two northern soul killers form The Capitols! "We Got A Thing" is a shameless follow-up to "Cool Jerk" – but we don't care, because the cut grooves great, and has some really wonderful drums at the beginning. "Tired" begins with some great drums, too – but ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Excellent work from one of the best Detroit groups of the 60s! Both tracks move way past their "Cool Jerk" hit – but still have the same fire and soul of that one. Ollie McLaughlin produced, and the whole thing swings nicely! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Great groovy stuff – Brother to Brother's fabulous cover of the Gil Scott-Heron track "The Bottle" – done here with a cool flanged vocal chorus on the lyrics, and a tight jazzy groove that reproduces the feel of the original, but adds some soulful female vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record
We love "Midnight Cowboy" – no matter what form it takes! This one's a sublime funky instrumental – lots of bass underneath the trademark organ, peppered with horn blasts by the group! The flip's a nice instrumental – an original, with a bit of a goofy groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record
"Funky Music" is a great early tune from Luther Vandross – a soaring clubby number based on the same changes as "Fascination", which he wrote with David Bowie – but done here in a style that's a lot more soulful, and very very groovy! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Bobby Byrd recorded this single after his days with James Brown, during a brief stint on the TK subsidiary International Brothers. The track has a nice choppy funk feel, with lots of guitar on the downbeat, and tight snapping drums. Bobby's voice is raw and soulful, with a lot of power behind it. ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Massive work from Young Holt Unlimited! "Soulful Strut" is still one of the group's best grooves – a fierce little tune that jogs, jumps, and has some wickedly funky piano – all that, and sampled by the Beasties, too! "Country Slicker Joe" is an LP cut, and has a ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Benny Johnson recorded one obscure album for the Today label in the early 70's, and although we can never find it, this single will more than stand testimony as to how great a soul singer he was. "Baby I Love You" is a nice uptempo groover, with a good brassy early 70's soul sound – ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Dang! This one makes us hungry! The cut's a mostly-instrumental number with funky wah wah guitar and horns. It begins with a guy coming home to his wife (named Geraldine, and sounding a lot like Flip Wilson's character of the same name), asking what's for dinner, and having her say "I don't ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
These guys are great – a sublime harmony combo with a sound that's always a treat, and which makes digging up their singles always worth while! Both sides on here are wonderful – sung perfectly, and arranged by Johnny Pate with a slight lilt that really hits a sweet Chicago groove, ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Tripped out work from this crossover combo that featured Ray Draper – and which had a mixed rock/soul/funk style that was right out of the SF scene! "Happiness" is a building groover with lots of bass underneath and some nice horns – and "Mess Around" is slower, but ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
"Family Man" is the cut here – a hard-vamping groover with some hard and skittish drums that really make the whole cut groove! There's some heavy tambourine shaking away with the drums and bass too – giving the track a jangly little groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record
