Live At The Red Garter Vol 1

LP (Item 459159) Fania, 1972 — Condition: Very Good
A Latin soul party – beyond compare! The album's a completely wonderful live set that really captures the energy, excitement, and warm sociability of the hip New York scene at the end of the 60s. The music is stunning – a freewheeling blend of jazz, soul, and Latin themes – played with effortless ease by a lineup that includes Joe Bataan, Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Bobby Quesada, Louie Ramirez, Ralph Robles, and some of the other heavy-hitters of the Latin soul years. (Just imagine trying to get so many jazz or rock talents together on one stage – it would never happen!) The album's incredible – and even the spoken introductions and crowd noise really help set the feel of the era's mighty magic power! Titles on this first volume include "Country Girl-City Man", "Mi Gusta El Son", "Sabor Sabor" and "Guatacando". Firey stuff, and one of their best records!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Orchestra Harlow

Electric Harlow
Fania, 1971. Very Good
Prime work by Orchestra Harlow – with the "electric" in the title used to describe the energy of the set, not really the instrumentation! There's a bit of electric playing on here, mostly on organ or piano – and of course the group's strong use of an electric bass – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Barretto

Que Viva La Musica
Fania, 1972. Near Mint-
A fantastic classic from Latin percussion legend Ray Barretto – one of his most sophisticated albums of the 70s, and a set that's different than some of his later salsa hits! The album mixes together rootsy percussion and smoother jazzy arrangements – in a manner that keeps things ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chicago Caribbean Arts, 1983. Near Mint-
An amazingly smoking set from trumpeter Arturo Sandoval – issued on a tiny label from Chicago, but easily one of his best records ever! The set captures Sandoval live in the Windy City, working with a tight combo that includes piano, guitar, and plenty of percussion – all stretched out ... LP, Vinyl record album
Egrem (Cuba), 1987. Very Good+
Not the commercial Real World album of the same name, but instead a homegrown Havana effort by this great Cuban group – led by Elio Reve Matos, with titles that include "Salgado", "El Palo De Anon", "El Ron Pa Despue", "Changui Clave", and "Injusta ... LP, Vinyl record album

El Gran Combo

Latin Power
Gema, 1968. Good
Latin Power is Latin Soul – and the album is one of El Gran Combo's best from the boogaloo era! The tunes are heavy on English language lyrics, and include a few great remakes of Anglo pop and soul tunes – all given a Latin Soul spin with plenty of heavy rhythms on the bottom, fierce ... Manzanita Y Su Conjunto

Trujilo, Peru – 1971 to 1974
Analog Africa (Germany), Early 1970s. Sealed Gatefold
Stunning sounds from the early 70s Peruvian scene – a really unique take on the cumbia mode of the time, and one that's topped with plenty of psychedelic touches as well! In truth, the rhythms here are often as Cuban as they are Colombian – a really great hybrid of both, used alongside ... LP, Vinyl record album
