❔

Bill Evans meets Bill Evans – in a uniquely-styled session that features overdubbed solo lines from Bill, creating a multi-piano sound that's really great! The approach sounds gimmicky, but it's not – and Evans carries all the sensitivity you might expect from the title and image on the cover – a personal, up-close style that's nicely free from piano solo cliches, given the extra work of the overdubs. There's a nicely rhythmic feel to most numbers, and the piano lines often work in chromatic counterpoint to create a warmly sparkling quality to the set. Titles include "Round About Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Theme From Spartacus", "Stella By Starlight", and "NYC's No Lark".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing. Cover has a center split in the bottom seam.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bill Evans

Interplay Sessions
Riverside/Milestone, 1962/1982. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A real standout in the Bill Evans catalog for Riverside – and that's saying a lot, given how important all of his Riverside albums are! The core session's a rare quintet outing for Evans – one that breaks the mode of the usual trio format by adding in Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Jim ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
Ostensibly simple stuff from Bill Evans, but pretty darn great – and a nice move into a more sophisticated vein than his earlier recordings! The album has him working with bassist Eddie Gomez, a hugely talented bassist that would be one of Bill's best partners during this period, and a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
The Marquis De Sade never sounded so sweet! For some strange reason, Schifrin decided to pay a musical hommage to De Sade with this one – but fortunately, he's not punishing himself with the subject matter at all, and is sticking to his jazzy bossa guns. The arrangements have a tight Verve ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Sona Libre
Verve, 1963. Very Good+
Excellent Verve album that Cal recorded with the great Clare Fischer on organ and piano. Clare's organ work on here is stellar, and he's got this cool little spare sound that works very well with Cal's vibes. The set includes a great version of "Sally's Tomato", plus the cuts "Hip ... Gerry Mulligan

Concert Jazz Band
Verve, 1960. Very Good+
Great large group material from Gerry Mulligan – and a record that definitely defines the sound of his famous Concert Jazz Band of the early 60s! The group features a four part sax section – headed by Mulligan, with other players that include Zoot Sims on tenor, Gene Allen on baritone, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt

Boss Tenors In Orbit!
Verve, 1962. Very Good+
A studio album, but one that really has Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt recreating some of the bold energy of their live shows – coming across with a vibe that's much more Prestige Records than Verve, thanks to the presence of the Don Patterson trio on the set! Backing is by Don on Hammond, Paul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver Nelson

Full Nelson
Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Excellent work from one of our favorite arrangers! Nelson was a super-hip super-soulful genius who crafted some of the best charts in the 60s. He managed to work in a great amount of jazz where other arrangers would leave things cold – and on a record like this he manages to make a large ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Very Good
Lovely Art Tatum work for Verve – solo, as with most of his later sides – and featuring some incredible interpretations of familiar tunes – opened up and turned on their sides through Art's majestic command of the keys. Titles include "What's New", "Somebody Loves ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hodges

Castle Rock
Verve/Norgran, 1952. Very Good+
An undisputed Verve classic, and proof that Johnny Hodges could make damn good records away from Duke Ellington! The set features a number of small groupings of Ellington players – like Al Sears, Billy Strayhorn, Lawrence Brown, and others – but the sound is quite different than with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre 3

Thesis
Verve, 1961. Very Good Gatefold
Fantastic stuff from Jimmy Giuffre! This record captures him at a perfect turning point in his career – after his initial piano-less experiments on Atlantic, but before the totally free work that graced his later years. The group is his trio with Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie/Django Reinhardt

Jazz From Paris
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good+
Some obscure work – and nice! We really dig side one of this LP – as it's got Diz in one of his rare "with strings" sessions, recorded here with backings by the Paris Opera-Comique Orchestra, on tunes that include "Night & Day", "The Man I Love", " ... LP, Vinyl record album
