LP (Item 45508) Portrait, 1985 — Condition: Used

Sade's second album, and while it's not totally sublime as the first, it's still a damn great set with a smooth jazzy vibe that will have you coming back again and again! Includes the lovely "The Sweetest Taboo", plus "Is It A Crime", "War Of The Hearts", "Mr Wrong", and "Never As Good As The First Time". (Non-gatefold pressing, including the printed inner sleeve. Cover is still in the shrikwrap, with the hype sticker.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Turning Point
Portrait, 1984. Very Good
A great revival of sorts for The Staple Singers – and a record that has them hitting a whole new groove to really open up their sound! Gone are the cliches of earlier albums, and in their place is a tightly-crafted approach to 80s soul – one that's clearly aimed at the dancefloor, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Brunswick, 1970. Very Good
Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! The band had always been great at love songs and uptempo numbers – but this record has them moving into more righteous area, picking up on some of the more socially conscious soul of their generation that had been working its way up the ... O'Jays Meet The Moments
Stang, 1974. Near Mint-
Hard funky soul album that features half Moments tracks and half O'Jays tracks. The O'Jays stuff is the stuff that they recorded before going to Philly International, like "Peace" and "Be My Girl" – real sweet soul gems, if you don't know them. Our fave, though, is the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1979. Very Good-
An oft-overlooked funky soul gem from the incredible Roy Ayers – taking turns with both uptempo material and more smoothed out soul sounds – all done with Roy's trademark jazzy approach to the dancefloor! No Stranger To Love is a sly, and often funky set that deserves to be mentioned ... LP, Vinyl record album
What Am I Gonna Do
Casablanca, 1974. Very Good
One of the greatest soul records of all time – and an album that we'd never part with! Gloria Scott only ever recorded this one full LP – but that's more than enough, as the whole thing's a masterpiece – produced by Barry White with the best of his 70s approach, and featuring ... Insides Out
Dakar, 1974. Very Good-
A wonderful early record from Bohannon – and with a very different feel than usual! Although most of Bohannon's work from the time is up-tempo and funky, side two of this album has some amazing slow spacey cuts – done with a drum sound that's still quite hard, but just slower than ... Go All The Way
T Neck, 1980. Very Good- Gatefold
It's the end of the 70s, and the Isleys are still going strong – keeping it real by dropping some of the fake funk of a few years before, and going for a smooth soul sound that would be one of their biggest strengths during the early 80s. This sound can be heard to perfection on the tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Love & Understanding
Dee-Lite, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Amazing work from Kool & The Gang – from a period when they were pushing past their tight early funky sound, into a super-dope mix of electronics and spacey jamming that is still pretty darn revolutionary today! Although you might think the album would be a bit disco by the date, it's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tamla, 1971. Very Good- Gatefold
One of the few cases in the history of pop music where the record is worth all the hype! Marvin blew everyone's mind when he unleashed this amazing suite of political soul tunes – not only just because he'd moved past the simple love songs of earlier years, but also because he was working ... Short Eyes
Curtom, 1977. Near Mint-
A great little record – despite the fact that the album was one of the factors that buried the Curtom record label! After the success of Superfly, the company thought another Curtis Mayfield soundtrack would be a sure million-seller – and really went to town on the record. Well, the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, 1977. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
This is the second of two live albums that Marvin Gaye cut during the 70s – and in many ways, it's the better one! The record features three sides of work recorded live at the London Palladium – mostly in these swirling medleys that are introduced by Marvin in a very soulful mode, then ... LP, Vinyl record album
Live At The Lighthouse
Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good
A great little session by The Three Sounds – and one that features the band grooving away in a style that's a lot more lively than some of their studio recordings from the time! The whole thing was captured live at the legendary Lighthouse – and Gene Harris plays both piano and organ, ... LP, Vinyl record album
