Amazing Grace

LP (Item 45483) Atlantic, 1972 — Condition: Very Good-
2LP Gatefold

A legendary album – one that has Aretha Franklin returning to her roots in gospel music – but working with all the strength and power that Atlantic Records had to offer! From early years recording as a young voice alongside her father's congregation, Aretha has matured into a hell of a lead singer – and really knocks it out of the park here alongside the mighty James Cleveland, and the Southern California Community Choir! While it might have been nice to record the set back home in Detroit, the California setting for the material works perfectly to elevate Franklin to a special place in the heavens – tying together her heritage in beautiful ways, and making for another great stride forward in her career during the 70s. One of the best ideas ever for a soul music concept album – with titles that include "Mary Don't You Weep", "How I Got Over", "Precious Memories", "Wholy Holy", "Never Grow Old", "Amazing Grace", and Climbing Higher Mountains".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red and green Broadway label pressing. NOTE: Cover has large patches of paint on the front, some pen, and split seams.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

First Take
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good-
What can we say? We've heard this one a million times, it sold over a million copies – but it's still incredible! The record is Roberta's first, and it features her in a mellow trio format, augmented by some occasional larger arrangements by William Fischer. At most points, though, the ... Chops
Atlantic, 1984. Very Good-
If you don't look beyond the group's name you might come to the conclusion this is some sort of over the top wailing fusion session. But it's more like a second rate imitation of Slave or 80s era EWF over the Sugarhill rhythm section, which isn't surprising since they are using Doug Wimbish and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quiet Fire
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+
Great small combo work by Roberta Flack, recorded early in her career, when she was still one of the hippest things around – and it's among her best records! A great little concept album – and one that really shows the continuing sophistication and growth of Jerry Butler's music in the 70s! Crisply popping grooves from Roger – a great solo record from the voice of Zapp!
