Soprano Sax

LP (Item 454524) Prestige, 1957 — Condition: Very Good+

A stone classic from Steve Lacy – a record that was nearly as important to the soprano sax in jazz as it was to Lacy in his career! In one record, Lacy almost single-handedly takes the soprano sax into the modern age – working before Coltrane and others to push the instrument from its more frequent use in trad jazz, and unlock its beautiful potential as a modernist solo vehicle. The setting here is relatively spare, with piano from Wynton Kelly, bass from Buell Niedlinger, and drums from Dennis Charles – and titles include "Alone Together", "Work", "Easy To Love", "Rockin In Rhythm", and "Day Dream".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(OJC pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Steve Lacy

Epistrophy
BYG (France), 1969. Very Good
A strong French session from 1969 – one in which Lacy gets back to his roots with a bunch of Monk compositions – working in the angular mode that first helped him get modern in the late 50s, after starting his career as a trad jazz player. The group on the set features JF Jenny-Clark ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Bahia
Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good
An album issued in the years after John Coltrane left the Prestige Records label – but a set that includes some very compelling sounds from the early years, really showing the tenorist in a strongly spiritual transition! Coltrane plays tenor throughout, and the record also features the Red ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1964. Very Good
Bad Bossa Nova is right – as Gene Ammons really hits a great groove here – one that's not exactly bossa, but which has lots of Latin and tropical touches! The session makes great use of 2 guitars at the same time – using that of Kenny Burrell for soulful rhythm, but also adding ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

Scottie Plays The Duke
Prestige, 1959. Very Good+
Shirley Scott plays both the organ and piano with George Duviver on bass and Arthur Edgehill on drums for these eight Duke Ellington tracks. The selections include "Caravan", "Just Squeeze In", "C Jam Blues", "Prelude To A Kiss", "In A Sentimental ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Quinichette

On The Sunny Side
Prestige, 1957. Sealed
A perfect example of the great skill that Prestige had for taking a good ensemble player, and putting him into a context that really let him open up in a manner that brought his best points to light! In this case, Quinichette's plucked from Basie's group and put with a tight bunch of soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Miles Davis & Horns
Prestige, 1951/1953. Sealed
Don't let the "horns" in the title put you off – because the record's not a hokey "with horns" record by Miles, but a batch of all-star sessions that has him playing with some really tremendous contemporaries! The set compiles early Miles Davis sides from two different ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Velvet Soul
Prestige, 1964. Very Good+
Classic mellow Jug – from a time when Prestige discovered that Gene Ammons would sell equally well to the mellow jazz crowd as to the jukebox jumpers. Most of the cuts feature Gene with a deep soulful tone that could qualify as "velvet", but which still has enough of a rough edge ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Wallington

Jazz For The Carriage Trade
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint-
Sublime work from pianist George Wallington – and one of his best albums ever! The set's also one of the few he ever recorded as a leader outside the trio format, and has him working with a very hip quintet that features Phil Woods, Donald Byrd, Teddy Kotick, and Art Taylor – all ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons, Etta Jones, & Jack McDuff

Soul Summit Vol 2
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
A set that's less a "summit" than a great collection of groovy work for Prestige Records in the 60s – tracks that didn't make it onto other full albums of the time, but which feature material by some of the most soulful talents on the label! Tenorist Gene Ammons is the main star ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of those 70s two-fers where Prestige went back and decided dicing up all those sessions in the 50s and 60s didn't make as much sense as issuing them as the way they went down. As such, this set collects work from one long blowing session, which eventually saw the light of day as two separate ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ronnie Mathews

Doin' The Thang!
Prestige, 1964. Very Good-
One of the only early albums as a leader from pianist Ronnie Mathews – a player who recorded more often in later years, but who really sounds incredible in this rare session for Prestige! Although a lyrical player at heart, Mathews also has a very hard edge here – more of a soul jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chisa, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
Wickedly funky work from the Jazz Crusaders – a pivotal set that has them electrifying their groove a bit more from the 60s, yet still not hitting the smother sound of later years! The core soul jazz mode of the group's start is still nicely in place – hard-hitting grooves from Wayne ... LP, Vinyl record album
