12-inch

Trumpety genius from Herb Alpert – a cut that gave him one massive hit to close out the 70s, and a tune that crossed over big into clubs, radio, and plenty of shag-carpeted rec rooms too! And hey, it worked for Biggie, right?  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Runaway (14 mixes)
A&M, 1995. Very Good+ 2x12"
A boatload of mixes of this Janet Jackson track, one of her more commercial numbers, but given some nice spins by Steve Silk Hurley and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. 14 different mixes seems like they're going a bit overboard, but we're not complaining: "G Man's Hip Hop Mix feat. Sure, the politics seem a bit silly now – but the track's still one of Prince's last really compelling hits. It's got a totally infectious hook, a spare Timmy Thomas-ish beat, and a strangely captivating vocal that really sticks with us. Nice post disco 80s club track, with a very New York sound, with elements of commercial soul and 80s groove combining at a mid tempo pace, with a nice dubby mix on the flip. 12-inch, Vinyl record

An excellent number from the Fatback Band, cut at the time they were transitioning to being called just plain old Fatback, and slicking up their funk sound with a slightly more commercial approach, which on this single means a slightly disco sound that puts this nice midtempo jam right in the ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

A great funky old school groove from the prime Brunswick 12" years – just the kind of indie club cut that kept the label going near the end! "Don't Say Goodnight" has a great rollerskating rhythm on the bottom and a blast of horns on the top – all to service some female ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
