We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sire, 1981. Very Good+ (pic cover)
The super-huge hit – done up here in the full 12" version, which also features the cut morphing into "Where Did Our Love Go". 2 60s soul covers for the price of one! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Sire, 1983. Very Good- (pic cover)
What can we say? Despite the stupid appearance of the band, "White Horse" was a classic breakdance/electro track that crossed over so big it had kids in Kansas running out to by parachute pants and squares of linoleum to play along with the kids in the Bronx. Despite that runaway hit ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
One Love/Superman
TK, 1977. Very Good+
A guilty pleasure! Celi Bee's "Superman" has to be one of the campiest disco cuts of the 70s, but heck, we just love it! The cut's a loving breathy ode to the man in blue – laid out over some compelling dancefloor beats and a pretty funky groove! Single also features the original ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Fantasy, 1978. Very Good+
Hardly a disco tune from Side Effect – and instead a nicely jazzy bit of club, served up in the best Wayne Henderson-directed mode of the group's Fantasy years! The tune's got a brassy finish that goes well with the lyrics – and it's backed by the even-better "I'm A Winner", ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Pic Hit, 1984. Very Good+ (pic cover)
Obscure mid 80s work by The Whatnauts – recorded after "Help is On The Way". The first two tracks are more in an 80s groove/funk mode – not really the best style for the group – but the cut "All I Need" is really a gem! The track's a smooth mellow love song ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Polydor, 1977. Very Good+ (pic cover)
Doobie-doo doobie-doo! One of the catchiest Roy Ayers dancefloor tracks ever – a bassy bumping thumper that wonderfully skirts the line between clubby and funky! The track's got female vocals singing along with the hook – all in a mode that's quite similar to the most uptempo work by ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
