We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Paul Winley, 1963. Very Good+
An essential document of one of Malcolm's most important messages – recorded live in Detroit, November 1963. The sound quality is great, and the speech is a wonderful example of Malcolm's tremendous ability to present the issues in a clear, concise manner – leaving no room for argument ... I Like Em Young
Partee, 1972. Very Good-

Midnight Concert
United Artists, 1961/Early 70s. Very Good+
A stripped down version of a record that was also issued in 3LP format, and which features some real gems from Lenny's 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall. The material is perfect, and the record captures Bruce at the best point in his career – when he was really breaking past schtick and just ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chess, Early 60s. Very Good
Pretty raw stuff from Moms – not in the content, but in the style of recording, as the record's definitely an "on the spot" number – recorded live in concert at the Apollo. However, that also makes it pretty compelling – as Moms is in home territory here – keeping ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1969. Sealed
A pretty compelling album for Sidney – a selection of poems written by African Americans – stretching back across a variety of styles, and read to musical accompaniment and strange production effects! Blue Magic
Atco, 1974. Very Good
The start of a tremendous run from Blue Magic – easily one of the greatest harmony groups of the 70s, a quintet we'd place in a rare class with heavy hitters like The Stylistics or The Moments! The album's smooth and sweet, but never slick – perfectly arranged by the great Norman ... LP, Vinyl record album
