Fantastic stuff, and proof that Rosemary Clooney was always one heck of a great singer – with strengths in jazz that you didn't always hear in her pop work! As you'd guess from the cover, Duke Ellington's leading the group on the album – and most of the tracks here are older Ellington standards, reworked with bold vocal lines from Clooney – in a way that's right up there with any of the usual singers with Ellington's band! Players include Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, and Harry Carney – and titles include "I'm Checkin Out", "Mood Indigo", "Blue Rose", "Grievin", "Hey Baby", and "Passion Flower". (CSP Encore collection pressing. Cover has brown packing tape on the top seam.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

For Once In My Life
Columbia, 1967. Near Mint-
A record that has a Motown hit for its title, but the album's got a depth that marks Bennett as one of the most complex singers of his generation – way past the broad belter of ballads from the 50s, and an all-adult male vocalist whose sound was essential to the sophistication of the ... Jazz Odyssey Of James Rushing Esq.
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
A classic from Jimmy Rushing – recorded at a time when he was really finding a new audience for his vocals! In a style that Columbia was using on a number of sides in the late 50s and early 60s, Jimmy and Buck do a bit of educatin' – and trace a progression of jazz styles from New ... A later repackaging of the excellent Flying High album – easily the group's best album by far, and unfortunately, too often the toughest one to find! Brazilian Romance
Columbia, 1987. Near Mint-
One of the last great records ever made by Sarah Vaughan – a really solid session of Brazilian tunes, one that's produced by Sergio Mendes, arranged by Dori Caymmi, and which features guest vocals by Milton Nascimento! The general approach is west coast mellow – as the group features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Those Were The Days
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+
Those Were The Days is a title tune sung famously by Mathis as a single – but even better are the rest of the tracks on the set – a cool batch of 60s numbers that really show Johnny stretching out comfortably with some new material, but never in ways that mess with his amazing vocal ... Double Take
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good
One of the rare Columbia sessions from Jackie & Roy – and a set that has them cutting new small combo versions of tunes they also did in the 50s – giving them a leaner style here, and a mighty nice swing! Includes a great version of "Dahuud", "Could You Use Me", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chiaroscuro, 1963. Very Good+
A mad mad afternoon with the great Babs Gonzales – one of the hippest jazz singers ever! Urana, 1979. Very Good+
Alive were one of the hippest all-female combos of their time – and although they were marginalized in the womyn's music ghetto for most of their career, they've got a great sound that's been rediscovered over the years by crate-diggers and jazz dancers! Collaboration
Mercury, 1987. Very Good+
Later work from both Merrill & Evans – but recorded with an icy edge that comes off surprisingly well!
