❔
Bobby Brown's out to put his New Edition past firmly behind him here – stepping out in a range of pop soul numbers that still have a sound that's as fresh as his late teen look on the cover! The Brown cliches haven't settled into full effect here yet – and there's a boyish charm on some of the best tunes on the set. Titles include "Girlfriend", "Seventeen", "Girl Next Door", "You Ain't Been Loved Right", "Spending Time", "Love Obsession", and "Your Tender Romance".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Still sealed! Cover has a cutout notch & hype sticker, mild corner bend.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jeffree

Jeffree
MCA, 1979. Sealed
This nice soulful sleeper was not that recognized in the 70s, but in the 90s, it's become a huge favorite in the Chicago's steppers scene, thanks to the excellent two-step groover "Love's Gonna Last". It's a great cut, with sweet soulful vocals, and a totally catchy midtempo groove ... LP, Vinyl record album

One Way

Lady
MCA, 1984. Very Good+
An overlooked gem from the ever-strong years of One Way – that early 80s run when the group kept on putting out great records! The vibe's changed up a bit from before, but that's one of the things that makes One Way so great – that they were kind of an evolutionary act, always drawing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Klique

Love Cycles
MCA, 1985. Very Good+
The group's third release – and although they've dropped the space suits, they're still grooving nicely in a slightly electric mode! The sound here is heavy on keyboards and bassy bits – a very catchy 80s groove that's topped by shifting male/female vocals from the members of the trio! ... LP, Vinyl record album

New Edition

Under The Blue Moon
MCA, 1986. Very Good+
New Edition show they're no Johnnies-come-lately on the harmony soul scene – and pay tribute to a host of older groups from the 50s and 70s – singing a mix of hits and soul classics in a laidback late nite mode that brings a real focus on their vocals. Given their age, there's a sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

MCA, 1979. Near Mint-
A great follow-up to War's first Music Band album – and proof that the group was still plenty darn funky at the end of the 70s! Although different from their original Chicano funk groove, the style here is still totally great – long, drawn-out funk that's filled with plenty of sharp ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dennis Coffey

Electric Coffey
Sussex, 1972. Very Good+
Mad funk from Dennis Coffey – and the follow-up to his landmark Evolution album! It's interesting to note that Coffey's group is listed as the "Detroit Guitar Band" – which kind of foregrounds their link between the city's two strongest music sides of the late 60s: the hard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnnie Taylor

Disco 9000
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
Disco 9000 is Johnnie Taylor's 3rd release for Columbia – a great batch of smooth soul tracks with a lot less of the "disco" that you'd expect from the title! Johnnie produced the session himself – and the album was recorded as a soundtrack (to a film that was later retitled ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dee Dee Bridgewater

Dee Dee Bridgewater (1976)
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
Dee Dee Bridgewater's first album as a soul singer – recorded a few years after she first broke on the scene as a righteous jazz vocalist on hip early 70s classics! The sound here is different than the material Bridgewater started with, but still plenty great from a soul perspective – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wolfman Jack

Wolfman Jack
Wooden Nickel, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A pretty silly little album, cut by border radio DJ Wolfman Jack, with funky soul and rock backing from southern California! Wolfman talks his way through most cuts – even when he's doing a cover of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" – but the instrumentation is pretty nice on ... LP, Vinyl record album
