Jimmy Giuffre

LP (Item 45103) Capitol, 1954 — Condition: Very Good
Giuffre's first LP – and although not as completely sublime as his late 50s sides for Verve and Atlantic, still pretty incredible work from one of the freshest new voices in jazz at the time! The album takes tracks from an original 10" LP session, and adds in a few more – so that you've got Jimmy playing tenor, clarinet, or baritone – in groups that include west coast cool players like Jack Sheldon, Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, Russ Freeman, and Ralph Pena. The writing's quite original, and Giuffre's already got that angular quality that will allow him to leap even further over the next few years. Titles include "Nutty Pine", "Wrought Of Iron", "Do It", "Ironic", "All For You", and "Sultana".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tangents In Jazz
Capitol, 1955. Very Good
One of Jimmy Giuffre's excellent early LPs for Capitol, and a nice blend of west coast styles with more modernist experimentation. Here, Giuffre begins his experiments in jazz without a "non-pulsating beat", that is, jazz without snapping cymbal, walking bass, or pounding piano to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jeremy Steig

Energy
Capitol, Early 70s. Very Good+
Excellent funky jazz from Jeremy Steig – the funkiest flute player we can think of! Price You Got To Pay To Be Free
Capitol, 1970. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! Mid 50s west coastery from Dave Pell – recording here in an octet that includes Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Ray Sims on trombone, Paul Smith on piano, Tony Rizzi on guitar, and Ronnie Lang on baritone. Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+
A great lost chapter in the Cannonball/David Axelrod story! The record features Cannon's classic quintet performing some longer, more serious works with orchestral backing – and the sound is vaguely similar to some of Axelrod's "high concept" work for Capitol. Some sweet Liquid Sounds from pianist Paul Smith – one of the grooviest players to recorded for Capitol Records in the 50s!
