Kool & The Gang — Open Sesame (plus bonus tracks) ... CD 14.99

A magic carpet ride of funky soul from Kool & The Gang – classic Open Sesame from '76 – one that took the group to a higher level! It's not as rawly funky as some of the group's earlier albums, but they do still bring it, just with a cooler spirtual vibe that we never expected – one that opens up their sound even further! The best example of this is the great cut "Little Children", a very righteous jazzy soul number that's been sampled to great use, and one that introduced a great mellow sound for the group. Other cuts include the dancefloor classic "Open Sesame", "Whisper Softly", "L-O-V-E", and "Sunshine". (Cover has some wear.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Funky Stuff/Jungle Boogie
De-Lite, 1977. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
By the time De Lite pulled together this compilation, Kool & The Gang had started to move away from the harder, jazzy funk of their early years and into a more commercial mode, but not quite hit the big time as they would in just a few short years. This nice double album looks back on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kool Jazz
De-Lite, Early 70s. Very Good+
A great album – even if most of the cuts are on other records! The set's designed to focus on the jazzier side of Kool & The Gang – and it sifts through the first few albums to come up with some of the more sophisticated (yet still totally funky!) numbers by the band, giving a good ... Music Is The Message
De-Lite, Early 70s. Good+
A pivotal album in the career of Kool & The Gang! This album has the band operating at the top of their early 70s funky powers – and it also shows them dabbling a bit with electronics, which would become a big part of their sound a few albums later. The best example of this is the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerk
Money, Early 60s. Very Good+
Don Julian's early band lays down a tight set of hard uptempo soul cuts, nearly all of them with a "jerk" groove to them. "The Jerk" was the big hit off of here, but we're huge fans of "Slauson Shuffle (pts 1 & 2)", a very groovy track about a very groovy street ... LP, Vinyl record album

Giving It Back
Fantasy, 1978. Very Good+
An excellent LP of mellow modern soul cuts – put together by Phil Hurtt, one of the lesser stars on the late 70s Philly scene, but a strong singer and writer who deserved greater fame. The record's got some great numbers – like the smooth sweet "Lovin", plus the tracks "W ... LP, Vinyl record album

Drive, 1974. Very Good+
Excellent work by this sweeeeeet Miami funk ensemble – one of the tightest combos to ever grace the Sunshine State! This is the first of the group's two albums for the Drive/TK label – and it's got a great sound that mixes rougher funky 45 type playing, with some of the smoother ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dakar, 1974. Very Good+
A wonderful early record from Bohannon – and with a very different feel than usual! Although most of Bohannon's work from the time is up-tempo and funky, side two of this album has some amazing slow spacey cuts – done with a drum sound that's still quite hard, but just slower than ... Douglas, 1977. Very Good+
Probably the funkiest record the Last Poets ever cut – with lots of heavy bass and drums, and a harder soul groove than on some of their other records. Along Comes Cal
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good+
Great stuff – and very very groovy! Cal cut this record for Verve during the height of his swinging 60s Latin years – and he's working here with arranger Chico O'Farrill, who at the time, was perfectly suited for Cal's short, jaunty approach to a groove! The album's filled with nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
