Woman, A Lover, A Friend

LP (Item 44853) Brunswick, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good
Dreamy work from Jackie – who's singing here over arrangements by Dick Jacobs that have a sweetly swaying romantic feel to them. There's still plenty of room for Jackie's great vocals to dip, turn, leap, and soar – and the album has him working in a dramatic mode that's quite striking, and different than some of his more rough-hewn singles. Titles include "A Woman, A Lover, A Friend", "Night", "We Kissed", "Am I The Man", "One Kiss", and "You Cried".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A lost set of female soul tracks – recorded in the waning years of the Brunswick label, when they were really experimenting with some great obscure groups, most of whom got lost in the tax shuffles of the label's demise! Buddah, 1974. Near Mint-
Rock-solid Buddah work from Gladys Knight & The Pips – still pretty righteous on the vocal tip, but often a bit fuller and more polished than before! Melvin Van Peebles

Brer Soul
A&M, 1968. Very Good Gatefold
Amazing stuff from Melvin Van Peebles! Brer Soul is a mad mix of funky soul insanity and straight up wisdom – a mix of moods that also seems to inform the best of his films, now that we think about it – and it's put together with enough wild clashes of culture to shake anyone up.
