Machito With Flute To Boot

LP (Item 44780) Roulette, 1958 — Condition: Very Good
Not just flute to boot – but a heck of a lot more jazz, too – thanks to a lineup that features Johnny Griffin on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Herbie Mann on flute! The presence of the three players really make this set a cooker – quite possibly Machito's best Latin jazz album ever, and right up there with the more-familiar Kenya set! Like that one, this is a perfect blend of modes – a late 50s extension of the cubop vibe first started by Diz and Chano Pozo, taken to new territory, and really cooked up nicely in the process! Rhythms are nice and exotic – not the usual Machito groove, but way way more – and the jazz solos are what really sends the whole thing home. Herbie Mann wrote all the tracks – and titles include "Love Chant", "African Flute", "Carabunta", "Bacao", "Davis Cup", and "Afternoon Death".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(60s stereo pressing – clean, with light marks. Cover has a light stain in one corner, and spine has a bit of splitting and some tape.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tico, 1960. Very Good+
Not necessarily a night "out" with Machito, as the material appears to be all studio recordings – but the album is a good example of the variety of Machito's successful group of the late 50s, and will give you an example of the kinds of tracks they'd run through in a live show. ... Tico, Early 50s. Very Good
Classic early work by Machito – recorded back when Mario Bauza was playing trumpet, and acting as his music director! The band has a good hard sound, with lots of strong jazz soloing, and plays with a fire that's missing from a lot of his later recordings. Tracks include "Asia ... LP, Vinyl record album

A real corker from Machito – a set that's got a lot more bite and earthy fire than some of his other albums of the 50s – as you might be able to guess from the cover and the title! The record definitely lives up to the Afro-Cuban promise on the front – thanks to very hip ... LP, Vinyl record album

Warm, wonderful work from Irakere – a combo who are working here in a style that's more straightforward than some of their material from the 70s – but equally nice, and played with a rock-solid blend of Latin and jazz that comes off perfectly throughout!
