What'd I Say

LP (Item 44777) Atlantic, 1959 — Condition: Very Good-
A pivotal album for Ray Charles – one that features the sweet electric piano jammer "What'd I Say" – offered up here in 2 parts, and a track that would become the prototype for so many funk songs in years to come! There's a vibe here that really takes off from the R&B of the earlier years – showing Charles as a pivotal force in the move towards soul music – both from an instrumental and vocal standpoint! The Raelettes back Ray up on most tracks – and other tracks include "Rockhouse (parts 1 & 2)", "Roll With My Baby", "You Be My Baby", "Jumpin In The Mornin", and "What Kind Of Man Are You".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover looks nice. Label has a sticker.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Live In Concert
ABC, 1964. Near Mint-
A classic live set from Ray Charles – one that equally showcases all the best sides of his sound in the mid 60s! The group's got a nice dose of jazz – which it shows right at the start – almost a mix of Basie swing and R&B, of the sort that Ray was sporting heavily in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

A righteous early 70s set from Ray Charles – and a record with a much deeper vibe than you might guess from the image of Ray and some kids on the cover! A classic! What seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius, and the result was the most successful album of his career – and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! The highlight here is Ray's cool cover of "Living For The City" – done with some great Fender Rhodes on the intro, and sung by Ray in a raspy voice that's quite different from the hit, or any other take on the tune! Miki Howard at the top of her game – just the sort of record that had her standing out as one of the best new vocalists in soul during the second half of the 80s – and one of the few who could draw on the classic styles of earlier divas like Patti Labelle or Phyllis Hyman!
