LP, Vinyl record album

One of Gene Chandler's later albums recorded for Carl Davis' Chi-Sound label. The poor fate of the Chi-Sound label helped this nice little modern soul gem fall into sidebar like oscurity, but the pulls from heavy Chicago soul talent like Tom Tom 84, Sonny Sanders, and Carl Davis, and it does a good job updating Gene's classic Chicago soul approach to a more modern soul-oriented groove. Includes the tracks "I'm Attracted To You", "Love Is The Answer", "Almost Daylight", "God Sent", "For The Sake Of The Memories", and "I've Got To Meet You". (Cover has a cutout notch. Shrink has a small hole.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Duke Of Earl (Vee Jay)
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+
A sweet soul classic from the young Gene Chandler! The record is built around Gene's hit "Duke Of Earl" – and it features Gene in a ridiculous looking "Duke" costume on the cover – but the record's a great one overall, and features some excellent late-night soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fast Fire, 1985. Near Mint-
Although Gene Chandler wasn't scoring nearly as big in the 80s as he was in the 60s, he was still a great vocalist, and could turn out some good material when he wanted to. This album's more than enough proof of that – and it features some good mellow tracks that have Gene singing in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
There Was A Time
Brunswick, 1968. Good+
A soaring, burning set from Gene Chandler – completely different than his early hits, and a key point in the transformation of Chicago soul in the 60s! Gene's always had a heck of a great vocal range – and he really gets a chance to use it to best effect on this album of jaunty and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gene Chandler Situation
Mercury, 1970. Sealed
Killer stuff from Gene! After recording a few sadly overlooked albums for Brunwsick, Gene hit big big big with this killer record on Mercury! Get Down
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1978. Very Good-
The legendary Gene Chandler gets down, and gets down good – in this classic late 70s set of clubby numbers and upbeat groovers! Good To See You
Chi Sound/United Artists, 1978. Sealed
Sophisticated soul from the great Walter Jackson – one of the best voices ever to come out of the Chicago soul scene, and a wonderful interpreter of just about any material! 20th Century/Westbound, 1975. Very Good
Classic work from Fantastic Four – who are really hitting their stride vocally, moving into a whole new sound from their work in the late 60s. The groove is a mix of 70s harmony soul and early Westbound disco – and the longish tracks get quite involved, both vocally and arrangement-wise ... LP, Vinyl record album
20th Century, 1979. Very Good
One of the last truly great albums that Barry White ever cut – with his solid sexy soul sound firmly in place, and a solid groove running through most of the tracks on the album. Barry's voice is still in fantastic shape, too – and it's a real treat to hear him open up on some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
20th Century, 1973. Very Good
Great stuff from the girls who first put Barry White on the map! The record is the group's second – and by this point, Barry had developed that tight snapping drum sound that made his orchestral albums work so well. You'll hear it to good effect on most songs on the LP, which have a great ... LP, Vinyl record album
Music Maestro Please
20th Century, 1975. Very Good
Excellent instrumentals from The Maestro! Barry's in fine fine form here – and he's just about the only one who could make a record with so many strings sound so funky! The album includes the excellent groover "Bring It On Up", which has a tightly snapping rhythm underneath ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pipas, Early 70s. Sealed
Very obscure LP by what seems to be a lost Chicano funk group from Chicago. Released by the small Pipas label on the south side, the LP includes a nice cover of "Funky Nassau", plus covers of "Do Me Right", "Simple Song", and "Them Changes". The LP also ... LP, Vinyl record album
