Scottie Plays The Duke

LP (Item 44709) Prestige, 1959 — Condition: Very Good

Shirley Scott plays both the organ and piano with George Duviver on bass and Arthur Edgehill on drums for these eight Duke Ellington tracks. The selections include "Caravan", "Just Squeeze In", "C Jam Blues", "Prelude To A Kiss", "In A Sentimental Mood", "In A Mellow Tone", "I've Got It Bad", and "Just A-Sittin & A-Rockin".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow & black label NJ pressing, with deep groove and RVG stamp. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Shirley Scott

Sweet Soul
Prestige, Mid 60s. Very Good
One of her early trio albums, with a nice laidback, late-night, organ soul groove. She's backed by Earl May on bass and Roy Brooks on drums, and the tracks include "Sweet Slumber", "Happy Talk", and "I Hear A Rhapsody". LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

Hip Twist
Prestige, 1961. Very Good
Hip Twist indeed – as Shirley's joined here by husband Stanley Turrentine, whose tenor work on any Scott album always takes it to the next level! Stan's tone is still nice and raw here – blowing out some hard and soulful lines that are the perfect complement to Shirley's more composed ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

Satin Doll
Prestige, 1963. Very Good
A nice little set from Shirley, made up of organ trio readings of Ellington standards. Maybe not the kind of thing you went nuts for on your last digging excursion, but a more than solid set of Sunday morning numbers that Scott and company, George Tucker and Mack Simpkins in this case, handle with ... Shirley Scott

For Members Only
Impulse, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
Groovin' set of tracks that has the lady organist in two settings – one with her trio with Jimmy Cobb on drums, the other with a hard swingin' big band led by Oliver Nelson. She's great with Nelson's band, and swings in the same hard way that Jimmy Smith does in the same setting. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Leon Spencer

Bad Walking Woman
Prestige, 1972. Near Mint-
Supremely heavy work from organist Leon Spencer – one of his classic jazz funk sessions for Prestige Records, and a record that shows him opening up his sound a bit more than before! The album has Spencer working in a few different lineups – some with small groups that feature Melvin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones

Snake Rhythm Rock
Prestige, 1973. Near Mint-
A tasty batch of funky jazz cuts from Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones – working here in a tight guitar groove that's actually better than that heard on his early albums for Prestige! The group's a good one – with Rusty Bryant on tenor, Butch Cornell on organ, and Grady Tate on drums – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Blue Haze
Prestige, 1954. Sealed
An early full-length album issued under Miles Davis' name – one that brings together some earlier 10" and single recordings for Prestige! The feel here is quite similar to Davis' work of the time for Blue Note – done with tracks that are short and tight, and very boppish – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Quinichette

On The Sunny Side
Prestige, 1957. Sealed
A perfect example of the great skill that Prestige had for taking a good ensemble player, and putting him into a context that really let him open up in a manner that brought his best points to light! In this case, Quinichette's plucked from Basie's group and put with a tight bunch of soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1961/1968. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2-in-1 set that reissues 2 hard to find albums by Roland Kirk! Kirk's Work is a strange and tasty album that Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s. The album's also been issued under the title Funk Underneath – but this is the original version. Kirk's tenor, manzello, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eric Dolphy

Out There
Prestige/New Jazz, 1960. Near Mint-
Eric Dolphy's second album as a leader – and already a bold step forward from the first! The format here changes from the more standard lineup of before – as Dolphy drops out other horn players, loses the piano, and brings the cello of Ron Carter into the frontline! Backing is by the ... George Braith

Laughing Soul
Prestige, 1966. Near Mint-
A fantastic lost bit of soul jazz from the 60s! The great reedman George Braith makes a rare non-Blue Note appearance here – working in a tightly grooving mode that's even groovier than his better-known work for that label! The group here features Grant Green on guitar and John Patton on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gildo Mahones

I'm Shooting High
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
Very hard to find LP by this obscure soul jazz piano giant from the early 60's. Best known as the accompanist for Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross, Mahones has a tight soulful style that's always in the pocket, and sounds like Bobby Timmons or John Wright in their best moments. This LP's unique in ... LP, Vinyl record album
