Subconscious-Lee

LP (Item 446337) Prestige, 1949/1950 — Condition: Very Good
One of THE key records in the Konitz school – a full length Prestige album that brings together important material from sessions originally issued on 10" LPs! The lineup here is virtually the Konitz school – with shifting lineups that include Billy Bauer on guitar, Lenny Tristano or Sal Mosca on piano, and Warne Marsh on tenor – all working as airily and fluidly as Konitz himself! How Lee managed to achieve such unity with his groups here will forever be a mystery to us – as will the freshness of the work at the end of the 40s, especially given that it's still arguably more "modern" than much of the jazz it inspired in years to come! Titles include "Progression", "Subconscious-Lee", "Rebecca", "Sound-Lee", "Fishin Around", "Palo Alto", "Ice Cream Konitz", "You Go To My Head", and "Tautology".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lee Konitz

Very Cool
Verve, 1957. Near Mint-
A slightly different album than usual for Lee Konitz in the 50s – one that's got a bit harder edge, and which has Lee working in a group with a trumpet! The set's performed by a quintet that includes Konitz usual suspects Sal Mosca on piano and Peter Ind on bass, along with Shadow Wilson on ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Traneing In
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
A beautiful album that more than lives up to its evocative title – an early session from John Coltrane, filled with long tracks that slide along brilliantly! Red Garland

Halleloo Y'All
Prestige, 1963. Very Good-
Red's usual trio bag is given a bit of a soul jazz twist (or perhaps we should say "a bit more of a soul jazz twist" since Red's always pretty darn soulful!) – in this set of tracks that has a slight gospel piano sound to it, and which also features Red playing organ on one track! ... Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good

Gene Ammons

Boss Tenor
Prestige, 1960. Very Good-
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige/Riverside, 1956/1961. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold

Prestige, 1956. Very Good+
Quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! John Wright

Nice N Tasty
Prestige, 1960. Very Good+
Very tasty stuff indeed – one of the few rare sessions cut for Prestige by Chicago pianist John Wright – a very soulful player who emerged from the Windy City at the end of the 60s! Wright's got a really fluid style here – one that nicely links some of the uptown class of Ahmad ... LP, Vinyl record album
