Soul Machine

LP (Item 4439) CTI/A&M, 1968 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold

A great soul album from the CTI years on A&M, and one of the few soul records ever on CTI! Barbary's got this spacey vocal style that's really great – not really falsetto soul, but kind of a tenor with a soft emotive quality. Arrangements by Artie Butler and Horace Ott give his voice a great pop/soul sort of Jerry Butler sound – and the grooviness of the instrumentation keeps things at a strong level that mixes jazz, soul, and pop up into a unique groove that's pretty darn refreshing! Features a totally great version of "Nature Boy", plus "What's Your Name?", "Call On Me", "Please Stay", "Nothin In This World", and "Like You, Babe".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some light wear, but is nice overall.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Herb Alpert

Beyond
A&M, 1980. Sealed
An incredible later record from Herb Alpert – working in a soulful funky fusion mode that really is well beyond the style that made him famous in the 60s! We love the easy breezy 60s sound of Herb & The Tijuana Brass too, but he really stepped up his game in exciting ways on records like ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gino Vannelli

Brother To Brother
A&M, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
A really standout bit of blue-eyed soul from Gino Vannelli – the kind of record that shouldn't be so great, but really holds up well over the years! To The Limit
A&M, 1978. Near Mint-
One of Joan Armatrading's real classics of the 70s – a record that perfectly blends her acoustic soul with some slightly tighter arrangements – but all at a level that still feels really personal and spontaneous! Light The Light
Horizon/A&M, 1979. Very Good+
A great step forward for Seawind – as the combo's working here in a style that's a bit leaner than before, but still every bit as warm and jazzy – a perfect foil for the soulful vocals of singer Pauline Wilson! The tunes have this wonderfully breezy feel that really befits the group's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Early work from Gwen Guthrie – produced by Sly & Robbie, but with a sweet modern soul sound that's got a lot less of their influence than you'd guess!
