so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.
Used Vinyl Grades
Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for
the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-")
the grading for the vinyl.
If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws,
these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that
since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with
the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, all of our records
are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible
for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt
to listen through them and note how they play.
The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:
Additional Marks & Notes
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially
if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record.
This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip,
cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
Early work by Hugh Masekela – recorded way before his big hits of the late 60s! The format is different than those recordings, too – with Hugh soloing on trumpet, over larger arrangements by Hugo Montenegro that have sort of a stock African soundtrack-y quality to them. The jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album
Nice hard funky Afro soul from Hugh – cut during the time when he was really perfecting his sweet little blend of African rhythms and LA soul! The tracks are all short and hard – with funky trumpet in the lead, and some tight hard-grooving rhythms in the back. Most of this stuff feels ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great little set of Hugh's MGM recordings – and one that features a nice mix of pop instrumental tracks, and others that have a more sophisticated African Soul sound. Included in this bunch are "Bajabula Bonke (Healing Song) parts 1 & 2", "U-Dwi", "Masquenada ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the hippest albums ever cut by Letta Mbulu – a perfect mix of her Soweto roots and the funky styles of her adopted California home! The album's the only one that Mbulu ever recorded for Fantasy Records – and the style brings together those great sing-song vocal modes perfected ... LP, Vinyl record album
It's the mid 80s and Mickey Hart's behind the production on this album, so you know it has a slick, glossy touch all over it, with a very "world music" approach. But the beauty of Olatunji's playing and subtle complexity of the rhythms trump the flashy approach. The lineup is huge, with ... LP, Vinyl record album
A bit of a mainstream effort from Makeba, perhaps trying to break her in the US market, as this set features more of an emphasis on pop material and standards than on some of her other records. Sid Bass conducted and arranged the orchestral backing on the folk and sixties pop classics, which doesn' ... LP, Vinyl record album
A great Sunny Ade disc licensed from the hard to get African Songs label! Chirping guitars trade off with vocal choruses over bubbling percussion laced with elastic talking drum on 10 numbers that run together as 2 side long jams, including "Mr Adenaike", "Egbe Board", "Joh ... A pretty good overview of the work that Celluloid Records was doing on the African front – featuring tracks from a variety of the label's best releases of the early 80s! The set list includes 4 tunes by Toure Kunda – "Emma", "Ne Nam 2", "Salya", and "B ... LP, Vinyl record album
Damn! Bill Withers can never do wrong in our book – and this album is definitely case in point! The set marks Bill's big move from Sussex Records to Columbia, and it's the start of an amazing run in the late 70s – completely sublime soul that wraps up all Withers' roots from the ... One of THE 80s groove classics – an excellent album that never gets old! The BB&Q Band had a tight outta site style that was the best small combo 80s version of 70s mainstream funk – sweetly jazzy, thanks to some really spacious production, and filled with lots of hard-stepping ... A heck of a great Latin Soul album – one of the best of the 60s, and pretty darn rare as well! The set's the only one we've ever seen from leader Joe Torres – and it's an incredible blend of soul jazz and Latin rhythms that was one of the few west coast sessions of its type! Normally, ...
